Just to let you know I discovered that the Dropbox app was not visible in my menu bar again... might have disappeared before today, as I usually only look at the app periodically

I performed the advanced reinstall yesterday and this morning when I opened the MacBook dropbox was not running.

Thanks for giving that a go! Can you also make sure that your desktop app has been updated to our most recent version, in case it’s not already?

Yes, the Dropbox.app is the most current version. I was never explicit, but I leave the computer on (sleeping with the clamshell closed) when I am not using it. Somehow it crashes during that configuration.
