Can I preview a plain text file which extension is not supported by Dropbox?

Hi,
I'm using Dropbox on my PC and iPhone, and storing some Emacs Org-mode files.
These files have ".org" extension (e.g. "memo.org"), but its contents is just a plain text file.
Only the difference is extension.

Previously I could preview ".org" files on my iPhone directly, but now,
I can't preview and recieve the error message "This file can't be previewed".
Is there any way to preview a plain text file which extension is not supported by Dropbox?

  • Hi @Walter,

Thank you for your confirmation! Yes, I've updated my iPhone & Dropbox app recently.
I was able to preview Org-mode files with Dropbox app as of December, 2017.

I've checked the threads you commented above and these are exactly what I want to request.
(sorry for bothering you, I should have researched similer previous posts in advance...)
I will watch over the progression of it.

    Thanks!

Hey there hidaka - how are you today?

Have you by any chance updated your iPhone recently?

Moreover, do you have the appropriate software installed on your iPhone to open (and possibly edit?) those files to begin with?

This is not within my scope of expertise yet I'd like to help as much as possible so could you maybe try converting those to a supported format somehow using a 3rd party app or service?

Also, note that there have been other users asking for previewing support for such files and I have already passed this as a feature request to our dev team as you can clearly see on this thread here and here as well.

Let me know how this goes!

Over a year later but no apparent solution to this common request?

I still get the error “No Preview Available” too, May 2020.

Very frustrating that this feature was removed. I used to be able to edit my txt files on dropbox web pages. Please put this feature back as an app in your brand new app store. thanks,

I also want to be able to open .org files, which are just plain text files. Changing their extension just so I can open them in the Dropbox iOS app is not an option. The only reason I want to use Dropbox at the moment is for working with .org files across devices.

Hi jamesrcole, thanks for posting on the Community!

Currently, this isn't an option on the Dropbox site.

If you wish, you can suggest this change for others to vote on, so the dev team can look into this in future!
