Why do I need a license to edit Word and Excel files now?
So this just happened today. I can't create new Word or Excel files, nor can I edit existing ones. There is now a paywall that says I need a commercial Office 365 version.
Um what?
Working for an org that has a number of remote colleagues, we rely on being able to share and collaborate on our in-progress work. Having to pay for an essential embedded program on top of a subscription, without any warning, is not cool.

- GT6136 years agoNew member | Level 2Just as there is no spoon in The Matrix, there is no "fix" for this. Looks like MS is putting the boots to Dropbox so they get more Onedrive users.

Microsoft office apps are still not opening and prompting a paywall for a commercial office 365 account.
This has NEVER happened before - Been using DB bussiness for months now and only last week has this been happening.
DEAR DROPBOX, FIX THIS ISSUES!!!! - THEJYESHARK6 years agoNew member | Level 2
Also, this only happens while working on my Macbook.
When I use the DB app on my iPhone, all files work as they should! It is a loophole but it isnt workflow friendly and hardly useable when using this service all day, every day..... - Walter6 years ago

Sorry to hear about this THEJYESHARK.
I just moved your post under this thread as your inquiry seems to be related.
Could you clarify what type of licence you're using for your Office 365 integration?
Keep in mind that the licence requirement is out of our remit. The integration is in place to allow users to navigate between the two apps easily, but the access to files in Office online is dictated by the Microsoft account being used, not the Dropbox account.
That being said, you can check what licence you use by following instructions I found on the MS website here:
https://support.office.com/en-ie/article/what-office-365-business-product-or-license-do-i-have-f8ab5e25-bf3f-4a47-b264-174b1ee925fd
If you have one of the below licences and are still experiencing the problem, please send me a screenshot of what licence you have and I'll have a further look into this:- Office 365 Business
- Office 365 Business Premium
- Office 365 Pro Plus
- Office 365 E3
- Office 365 E4
- Office 365 E5
Thanks in advance!

This is truly annoying. Why do products always get worse over time?

True… We got Dropbox Business 3 years ago and it was clearly the best option at the time.
Nowadays OneDrive offers much more (full O365 compatiblity + allows to sync Desktop, Documents etc...) and as it's included in O365, there's no reason to pay for Dropbox anymore...
