2 laptops - only want certain files on each one to always sync automatically
I have two laptops and want only certain files synced to each one- but then I want them to be synced automatically. Is that possible or do i need new upgrade to smart sync. I don't want to go file by...

That's not how it works. Any preferences you set for Online/Offline files or Selective Sync are specific to the device you set them on.
Personally, I'd use Selective Sync. I'd start by creating two folders called Laptop1 and Laptop2 for example. On Laptop1, use Selective Sync to remove the Laptop2 folder, and on Laptop2 use Selective Sync to remove the Laptop1 folder. You now have two folders that are only accessible on the appropriate computer.
Next, move the files you want accessible on Laptop1 into the Laptop1 folder. Do the same for Laptop2. As the files are moved into their respective folder, they'll be removed from the other computer.
If that doesn't work for you and you still want to see all the files on each computer (but not have them stored locally), you'll need to mark your folders or files as Online-only as you see fit on each computer.
