Dropbox acquires Boxcryptor. What will happen to all those files that have been encrypted?
Hi
As most will know, dropbox has purchased boxcryptor.
At this point my question is, what will happen to all those files that have been encrypted with boxcryptor ? Should they all be decrypted and wait for communication on how the transaction will be handled by Dropbox ?
Boxcryptor was used to encrypt files using other cloud services, will this change ?
Thank you very much
Riccardo

Since this is such a new development, such answers are likely not available yet, beyond what has been stated by the Boxcryptor founders (emphasis mine).
What does this mean for our users and customers?
First of all: All our existing users and customers will remain with the German Secomba GmbH with the same shareholders as during the past 10 years. No contracts, customer data or keys will migrate to Dropbox, all data will remain in our German data centers.
While we’ve sold several key technology assets to Dropbox, we will continue to service our existing users and customers pursuant to the terms of their existing contracts. However, as of today, we will not allow the creation of new accounts or purchases of any new licenses.
If you’re an existing customer, you can keep using Boxcryptor as you do today, and we’ll be in touch with more details as we join forces with Dropbox. If you’re new here and would like to stay up to date on Dropbox’s progress, join the Dropbox mailing list.

If you were a Boxcryptor user before the sale to Dropbox, you can still use it as a Local Account. However, you will need to have the decryption key to do this. Hopefully, by now you will already have that key since you can only download it if your account is still active.
- Martin R.192 years agoCollaborator | Level 10Yes, actually this was well communicated by BC and hopefully everyone downloaded the keys in time. Another issue Mac users need to be aware of is that the BC app is not compatible with newer MacOS versions like Ventura or Sonoma. If you still need to decrypt files, you will need to have access to older MacOS versions or Windows. Keep this in mind. Download the BC Apps for later installation, as no one knows when BC will close the website. If you install BC now, you will have to choose the option for a local account, as your (free) online account no longer exists.

Thank you for your response. Does this mean that individuals will not be able to use Encryption on Dropbox?
Yes this is correct. As has been said its going to be a Business only offering.

Hi @apfund ( Andrea ),
is there a way to become an early access customer ( as a business user, reseller ) ? 2Q24 is a little disappointing as first 3Q-4Q 23 was stated as release timeframe.
thx
Being honest - never ever believe or follow the timescales issued by Dropbox.... they are still rolling out Paper 2020 and we are just about to enter 2024!

I'm on Ventura, and as far as I can tell, it is working flawlessly. However, I never upgraded to the latest version (v3.x?). I'm still on v2.48. So maybe that's why.
- Martin R.192 years agoCollaborator | Level 10thanks for the info/correction. So most probably I need to correct and limit my previous statement regarding the compatibility to MacOS 14 Sonoma. I tried to install BC 2.48 but got the error message that this version is not compatible with the OS. I didn't try BC version 3.x

can we use a local boxcryptor account on a windows PC?
If yes, how please
Marc
- Martin R.192 years agoCollaborator | Level 10First question: did you download your key from BC website before your free online acount was closed? If yes, you shall use it when you chose the option in your local BC app to proceed with a local account. That alternative option appears at login. If you don't have your key you won't be able to decrypt your files anymore.

I did download my key. I don't see an alternative option when I log to Boxcryptor on my window PC ( no 3 points)
Thanks for answering
- Martin R.192 years agoCollaborator | Level 10I'm glad you have your key. Since I use a Mac I cannot tell you exact details for Windows. May be you will need to delete the installed BC app and reinstall it. At first login you should get the option then.
