Re: Deleting files does not free up space

Incorrect dropbox space usage on windows

Hi Guys,

My local Windows Dropbox is fully synced with my online Dropbox.  Windows Explorer file/properties shows my Dropbox folder is 576 MB but to my surprise, dropbox.com and dropbox app both say my dropbox is full. I have checked the plan tab and found my regular file size is 3.4 GB which is not correct. My shared folder only takes less than 100 MB. What is going on here? Why the discrepancy? Any inputs?

Thanks,

Tao

Some time ago I got a notification that I used 1.88gbs of my 2.00gbs limit.  On checking my folder I just deleted all the files to make room for more capacity.  Right now there are no files in my folder, but DropBox is still sending me reminders that I have almost reached my limit!!  How does this get resolved?

Hey @Destin1, thanks for reaching out.

Do you perhaps have any shared folders taking up your space or any backed up files?

Absolute newbie here.

I ran out of space and then deleted almost everything.  My account says I am still out of space despite only using a small amount of my quota.  What's the trick?  It seems that once you use space you are never able to delete and use it for something else.

Of course, I can buy a non-standard account - but the same question arises - why can't I delete files to free up space.

I'd appreciate any advice

Regards, Kevin J

Hey @KevinJ, is it possible that you're a member of a shared folder or that your backup files are taking up your space?

Thanks Hannah. No, I've covered all those possibilities.

Thanks for checking back in, Kevin.

What does the plan tab in your account settings report?

Also are you using our desktop and the backup feature? If so, on a Windows or Mac computer?

Hi again Hannah, I really do appreciate your assistance.

I have the Dropbox App installed on a Windows 11 machine and a Macbook Pro.  Neither are doing any form of backup.

I can't find a Plan tab as such, but my account is BASIC user with 21 gig of space the site reports I'm using 21.8 gig.  I'm currently using 3 gig as I've deleted a lot of files.

I'm completely stumped.

Hey @KevinJ, sorry to jump in, but I just wanted to mention that you can navigate to your plan tab by clicking on this link directly.

When it comes to your used quota,  have you checked your backups page to see if you can find anything there?
