Dropbox Backup
91 TopicsI'm getting an "Attempted to zip too many files" error when trying to restore a backup.
Device (Dell XPS 15, iPhone 13, etc.) Operating System/Browser (if using the web) (Windows 11, macOS14.3, etc.) Dropbox App Version/Browser Version (Chrome 124, Safari 17 etc.) Question or Issue While trying to restore, or in Dropbox's parlance, "Download" an existing backup of a laptop being replaced by a new laptop, I received the error message shown in the title. No further explanation given. I searched for the error in the Help Files and found... NOTHING! I searched here in the Community and found a thread right away from two years ago that described receiving the same error message. One reply was marked as a solution, and although it may have helped with the OP, pointing him to a Help File article on backups, it did not help me decipher the error message or how to work around it. In fact, the article stated that after signing in to Dropbox on the new computer and downloading and installing the app, that I should have been prompted to automatically restore the backup from the original laptop. That did not happen. I can't even imaging how it could happen since the software wouldn't know which device that had been backed up the new device was replacing. This was very discouraging to me in that not only finding out other people had experienced the same issue, but it wasn't acknowledged in Dropbox's Help Files, and replies had been turned off in the thread, despite the lack of a real solution. My fear is that, despite its hefty fees for services, Dropbox backup and restore may not be really ready for prime time. It's pretty obvious that restoring to a downloaded zip file is not a true restore and involves a lot of extra work by the user, even assuming the backed up data is intact. My guess is that Dropbox doesn't have a true restore function, and that also, it has a limitation on the number of files that can even be downloaded in a zip file. Anyone else experienced this error message and actually found a solution?25Views0likes1CommentHow can I copy the contents of my Dropbox folder to an external drive?
Device (MacBook Pro) Operating System/Browser (if using the web) (macOS15.6) Dropbox App Version/Browser Version 237.4.5655 I am trying to simply copy the contents of my Dropbox folder to an external hard drive as a backup (not with the intention to save regular working files on the external hard drive as I know that would create a problem when the drive is disconnected. I am super confused by the Dropbox Backup website/app: when I go to manage backups I can't see a clear option of how to select my backup drive (Seagate portable drive) and transfer my Dropbox contents over. Instead it is giving me options to backup the folders on my computer (pictures, documents etc.). Please help! This should be super easy and clear???37Views0likes1CommentHow can I save a Dropbox backup folder to Google Drive?
Question or Issue I've been receiving OVER THE LIMIT emails for years now re: my dormant FREE DB ACCOUNT so I just went and transferred all of my DROPBOX files to my Google Drive. But I supposedly still have 340GB in a video file (folder, actually) sitting in my DROPBOX BACKUP folder. But no matter what I do it refuses to drag & drop into my Google Drive like I just did with all of my regular files and folders. How do I transfer that backup folder to my Google Drive or can I NOT transfer backup files and must just delete? Thanks in advance for the solution! Scenario: I was preparing my old laptop (a Macbook Pro) for sale and I did not want Dropbox Backup to interpret my wipe / reset activities as a mass deletion of all my files, so I disabled Backup (and Sync) before doing so. My assumption was that the last known good backup would be retained. Upon setting up my new MBP, I dutifully installed Dropbox and navigated to https://www.dropbox.com/backup/all to find my old backup — all my backups are usually listed here, and double-clicking one of them usually allows me to view the contents of that backup and to download individual files from it. To my horror, I found out on this occasion that THE OLD BACKUP HAD DISAPPEARED! The new backup (for the new MBP) as well as my other backups for my other devices were still in the list, but the old backup was conspicuous by its absence. I flew into a panic. There is a 'Show/Hide deleted backups' button on that screen, and clicking it revealed my missing / disabled backup. Double-clicking this now-unhidden backup entry did nothing. Panic intensifies. After a long discussion with Support, I noticed that if I hover over any of my backups, the URL shown is of the format "http://www.dropbox.com/backups/ {machine ID} ? {some querystring stuff}" and if I just use the first part up to and including the machine ID (i.e.: http://www.dropbox.com/backups/machineID ) then I could view my old backup just like the others. TL:DR; Dropbox Backup will hide disabled backups and seemingly will not let you access them, but there's a workaround. I think this is either a bug, or an unintentional side-effect of hiding disabled backups. I think there should still be an option to view the contents of a disabled backup, either through the existing double-click functionality or via the ellipsis menu. In any case, a disabled backup should not be marked as 'deleted' and I hope this does not mean it will be automatically deleted from my account after 30 days.97Views0likes2CommentsHow can I download and restore my external hard drive backup data?
Hello Dropbox Team! I backup up an external hard drive with backups beta and my disk failed, and now I have to download all in badges to recover all my disk information, could you please add an option to restore a backup directly to the disk or maybe add the option of having the backup on the Mac finder to just access the files there and copy them to my new external hard drive ?101Views1like1CommentSyncing Cloud Folders with External Drive
I am backing up folders to an external drive by manually clicking the folders and choosing "Download" and pointing to where I want them on the external drive. Is this the right way to create a backup? I want to be able to sync the files between the cloud and the external drive, is that possible? When I plug in the external drive, I do not get the "back up this drive" option. Thanks!206Views0likes6CommentsViewing backup files on mobile app
Hi, all! I have some old flash drives that I just backed up on my MACBOOK. They appear in DropBox Backups. I can’t figure out how to view the backups in my mobile app. I can see the file names in my mobile app. But, when I click on them, it simply takes me to the general list (camera uploads, documents, etc.) TIA!Solved11KViews0likes12Comments
