File access

I think you should make files stored offline on Android available in the file system. As it is now, the dropbox files marked as 'available offline' are hidden from the rest of the operating system. This gives a number of problems: 1: When opening a file in an app, that app may put the file path in its 'most recently used documents'-list. However, since the path it gets from the Dropbox-app is not long-lived, the 'most recently used documents'-list becomes unusable, since the links on it become dead rather quickly. 2: It makes using browsing apps, like photo viewers or podcast players, on your offline files impossible. 3: Some apps expect content to be found on the file system. For example, the samsung app used to download content onto a samsung smart watch, expects to find files in the file system. It cannot be used to download files from dropbox onto the smart watch. 4: Sometimes a smart phone is used a bit like a computer. Like uploading files to an FTP-server and the like. A FTP-client typically expects to find files on the file system, and allows them to be selected and uploaded. This does not work with Dropbox. A possible work-around is to export the contents from the dropbox offline folder onto the phones regular file system. This is unsatisfactory because: 1) It feels cumbersome. The number of clicks to send a podcast episode to a smart watch, or to download a .pdf from dropbox and upload to an FTP-server, becomes a few too many. 2) For files which can be edited (like password manager saves, various profiles, text documents etc), the user needs to remember to copy the file back to Dropbox, which is very error prone. Dropbox obviously already has technology to synk a file system folder with dropbox. Could not this functionality be offered on smart phones also?21KViews89likes82CommentsSpotlight Search Doesn't Link to Files in Dropbox in macOS 13 Ventura
After upgrading to macOS Ventura, I was prompted to upgrade to "Dropbox for macOS 12". I proceeded with that, it moved my Dropbox folder to ~/Library/CloudStorage and confirmed all was successful. Now when using Spotlight to search (I often type something like 'drawings folder' to open a folder called Drawings) the results in Spotlight show the Dropbox app icon beside the name of the item I want (rather than a Finder icon for folder or file). Hitting Enter or clicking on the result switches to Finder and does nothing, or sometimes will open the Applications folder and show the Dropbox app. It's not linking me to the actual file in ~/Library/CloudStorage. I have done the following and the problem is not solved: Restarted Ensured all files are available for offline access Rebuilt the spotlight index Unlinked Dropbox from this Mac, did a complete clean install of dropbox, performed the upgrade to v159.4.5870 and synced just one folder to begin Nothing works. Any suggestions??Solved59KViews20likes398CommentsWhat does 'refresh to update' on my offline files mean? How can I do it?
I have a number of folders set as "Make available offline" on my iPad. Generally this works fine, but sometimes I get the yellow exclamation mark icon and "Refresh to update". Can someone please tell me what "Refresh to update" means - there is no refresh button and no refresh option in the menu. What am I supposed to do???Solved24KViews10likes61CommentsDropbox sync with multiple drives/folders for a single account.
Hello, What I'm looking for is a way for Dropbox sync to manage multiple drives in a single account. (i.e. with a portable SSD in addition to my laptop's internal SSD as well) In my use case, I want to maintain my local (internal) drive as the main Dropbox location that'll sync continually (essentially every day), but I'd like to use a portable SSD as an additional backup, which will periodically be connected to the computer to sync with Dropbox. Also, should such a function get made, is it possible to do this without pushing all the files from the cloud to the hard drive and be able to directly copy them over to the external SSD (at least for the initial synchronization)? Thank you, JordanSolved282Views3likes11CommentsSearch by tags in mobile app
I checked if this topic exists and didn't find any specific answer to my issue. I'd like to start using tags but to my surprise, I can't search by them in Dropbox mobile app. On the web, it works but not on mobile so looks like there's no point for me to waste time tagging my images to then not be able to take advantage of the tags when I travel and have my mobile phone only with me.1.2KViews3likes4CommentsOnline-only not working in Surface Pro 11 (Snapdragon version)
Recently I went back to Dropbox having read that it now works with Snapdragon Windows versions, but currently I have a significant issue. I cannot have any online-only file in my SP11, thus I cannot have all Dropbox files in my device. I have this in the main DP screen: Then I go to "Manage hard disk space", select folders and make online-only. In less than a second I get the message they are online-only, but they aren't. Any idea how to solve this? Thanks in advance.Solved1.2KViews2likes23CommentsDropbox icon not appearing in Macbook dock
Earlier this week, I traded in my two year old MacBook Pro 14" running Sequoia 15.4.1 for a new MacBook Pro 14", which is also running the same version of Sequoia. On the old MacBook, I had the Dropbox Mac desktop app in the dock. Note - the actual blue and white Dropbox app icon, not the group of folders representing the Dropbox folders. I reinstalled the Dropbox Mac desktop app but when I open it, the blue and white Dropbox app does not appear in the dock. I can see the icon in the menu bar but nothing in the dock, which is my preferred way to access my Dropbox folders. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times but no difference. I have given Dropbox full disk access in System Settings. It is set to launch on start-up. Can anyone offer a thought on why this is happening? Please don't suggest any alternative ways to access my Dropbox folders, I know what they are but they are not my preferred route and I can't see why this is happening with the new MacBook running exactly same version of the OS. Thanks.202Views1like6CommentsHow to remain ineligible for "new Dropbox for macos on File Provider"
Luckily, I managed to still be ineligible for macos on File Provider, and I would like to keep it that way. How do I make sure I do not become eligible and keep the ~/Dropbox location, in my home folder? I have set my default to Available Offline and choose Selective Sync for folders that should remain on Dropbox. Is that a successful configuration towards my goal? Are there any complexities I could add to make sure I'm the last one to become eligible? Uncountable things would break if I were to wake up to "your Dropbox folder is now in ~/Library/MobileSomething". Thanks a lotSolved523Views1like2CommentsNo search results when I use finder on my Mac
I keep all my recipes, among other things, in Dropbox and have always been able to search using Finder. Not only would it search file titles, but it searched the entire document, so if I'm looking, say, for a recipe that includes "buttermilk", it would show me everything with buttermilk as an ingredient. Not that I've updated, I get no results searching Dropbox in Finder--I get results in "My Mac", but that includes a whole lot of other extraneous and irrelevant items. Also, when I search through Dropbox.com, which is a huge inconvenience, it only gives me results with "buttermilk" in the title. Am I missing something? Is there a workaround, or is this just a function of the update?Solved2KViews1like4Comments
