486 TopicsSetting folders to Online-Only has left countless orphaned files on Mac OS
I have a folder in Dropbox called "~ ~ 0 DropBox Only." For ease of reference, I'm just going to call it "Dropbox Only." It contains many many folders that I intended to make online-only, having started with all Dropbox folders being synced normally. I had assumed that the local hard-drive based files would disappear. What I did not realize is that the folder structures and file names were not removed. It took me quite some time to realize this. As a result, I saved a number of files into folders in the Dropbox Only folder. In Finder, what I see is that files in the Dropbox Only folder (which could be several layers down in the folder structure) have either a cloud with a down arrow, a cloud with an exclamation point, or just a cloud. If a file in Dropbox Only is "orphaned," has a cloud with down arrow, and I try to open it, I get "Couldn't communicate with a helper application. Try your operation again. If that fails, quit and relaunch the application and try again." If it has a cloud with an exclamation, then I get "The document "xxxx" could not be opened. Try your operation again. If that fails, quit and relaunch the application and try again." If I try to open the "orphaned" file from within an application, the application often hangs or has other issues. Files and Folders added since the shift to online only-behave normally. I likely have thousands of "orphaned" files. I would happily just delete the folders, but at this point, I have many important files that have been added to some of these folders which I cannot afford to lose. If I could visually identify the "orphaned" files by their cloud status, that would help, but an "orphaned" file and a regular file that is not currently synced both show a cloud with a downward arrow. I'm tempted to change the status of the Dropbox Only folder to normal syncing, but (1) I don't know what will happen to files added since the syncing change and (2) I doubt I have enough disk space to hold the full contents of Dropbox Only. I am just looking for general guidance that allows me to either remove large numbers of "orphaned" files or restore them to normal syncing. Also, if I do successfully restore a sub-folder to normal syncing and then want to move it back to online-only, do I need to go through and delete all the affected file and folder entries on my hard drive? Presumably, the hard-drive versions are all "orphaned" at this point? With certain critical folders, I have renamed folder xxxx to xxxx_B on the hard drive. I then download the Dropbox version of xxxx. I find that xxxx and xxxx-B do not have all the same file and sub-folder names, so I have to painfully go through and check them against each other. This solution will not scale up to cover the thousands of files and folders. For now, I just use the xxxx folder, and if I am missing something, I look for it in the xxxx_B folder and move it to the xxxx folder. This is all a horrible mess, and I am just trying to find a way forward. Any help or thoughts are appreciated. macOS Sequoia 15.3.243Views0likes5CommentsDropbox desktop app on Mac not syncing 1.8 GB worth of data.
Hello, I’ve been a Dropbox user for many years and have always been very satisfied with your service. However, for the past few days my Dropbox app on macOS has been stuck syncing around 1.8 GB of data (approximately 2,900 files). I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app twice, but the problem persists—and indeed seems to have worsened, as now the entire Dropbox folder is syncing extremely slowly. New files aren’t uploading at all. For reference, I’m using a MacBook Pro (2017) running macOS Big Sur (version 11.7.10). Could you please advise on any further steps I can take to resolve this? I’m happy to provide additional details if that would help. Thank you very much for your assistance.84Views0likes12CommentsThe Dropbox right-click options are gone from my Mac's Finder.
I recently changed the location of my Dropbox folder and now I no longer have my right-click menu. Dropbox is running and everything has been synced. I've restarted and reinstalled dropbox and it did not fix my issue. Latest version of Dropbox: 221.4.5365 MacOS: 15.461Views0likes11CommentsUnable to move Dropbox folder to external drive on Mac
Good evening, I have tried many solutions suggested by this forum to get the result of having a copy of the files present on the cloud also on an external mac disk but without success (permissions, formatting the APFS drive encrypted and not, mac os extended). The disk where the operating system resides is 250GB and is not sufficient to also contain the dropbox files. currently my operating system is sequoia 15.3.2 si imac retina 5k 2020. do you have any solutions?Solved140Views0likes22CommentsSelective sync issues after migrating to a new Mac Mini M4 from an M1
I upgraded to a Mac Mini M4 from a Mac Mini M1, there are many Dropbox Selective Sync issues after migration. I think I understand how to clear them up, but how can I get folders that are already in my Dropbox account in cloud to appear in Finder in Available Off Line mode? For example in Finder I have a folder xxx (Selective Sync Conflict), I can delete it, but how do I get the original xxxx folder to appear in Finder? Many thanks, it seems searching Dropbox help just gives me every possible solution to everything except what I need.30Views0likes3CommentsA Dropbox icon has replaced the Desktop and Documents icons on macOS
I have Dropbox latest client installed in MacOS. I don't use the Dropbox backup features for desktop or documents - however it has still taken over these icons in the Finder navigation bar. I've tried removing Dropbox, but as soon as I reinstall, the icons revert back. Does anyone know how to clear / prevent Dropbox from taking over these icons in the Finder navigation bar?92Views0likes11CommentsFiles that I update on my Mac don't sync online.
In the last couple of weeks, local files that I work on are not syncing online. If they do, it is extremely slow. My internet is fine. I am on a Mac as well. I work synchronously with others on these files, so it's a bit concerning that they may not be working on my most recent versions. I have been using dropbox for over 8 years.56Views0likes5Comments"Copy Dropbox link" option not working on macOS Sequoia 15.1
I use a Basic version of Dropbox. The Quick Actions menu works on my MacBook Pro (2023) running Sonoma 14.7.1 but not on my other MacBook Pro (late 2023) running Sequoia 15.1. Share and Copy Dropbox link do nothing upon right clicks. I appreciate any help in solving this problem.1.2KViews1like40Comments
