Every time I use a download link for a large file, I get "site unavailable" error.
Been having this issue for years now and every time I get sent a dropbox link for a large file (+5GB) I dread it because I know I can't simply click it and go work on something else and come back toa downloaded file. It's incredible that Dropbox hasn't fixed this issue in 2025.
Yep, Switching browsers sometimes works. Simply restarting the download sometimes works. Clearing cookies sometimes works. Clicking "resume" as soon as it fails if you happen to be watching the download sometimes works. But why am I having to figure out all these tricks to simply download a file? No other cloud service on the planet has this issue. Why can't this be fixed?

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to give the impression that the issue was solved. I have no add ons or extensions for Chrome. However the download worked in Firefox (where I do have several extensions active)..... but only this time.
Sometimes it works in chrome sometimes Firefox, sometimes 90% of the file will download before failing and sometimes barely at all....and there seems to be no discernible reason why.
So to be clear. This issue is very much ongoing and unique to Dropbox and has been for YEARS according to other posts here on these forums and the internet.
I have yet to see any solutions offered other than...clear your cache and cookies, delete add ons, and update your browser

Thanks for sharing the good news, gthomascraig! You may also want to disable your browser add-ons and extensions, in case the issue comes back again. Certain add-ons and extensions can interfere with expected browser behavior, so please disable them and refresh your page.
Other than that, we’ll be here if you need something else.

Fourth attempt (Firefox normal window) was successful. No idea why.

first attempt was a normal window. Second....and now third attempt (with a single file download link) was in an incognito window. However, got a different error this time. "File wasn't available on site".
Fourth attempt now ongoing inside a Firefox normal window. File is about 15% finished. Will report back with results.

Hi from me too, gthomascraig. I know you’ve already tried a bunch of troubleshooting steps, but can you also test this via an incognito window on your current browser?
Are you experiencing the exact same behavior there, as well?
This may help us isolate the issue a bit more and investigate further.

second attempt....same result. This time only 6GB was downloaded before failing.
As you can see the WAV files download no problem.
*these are downloading to an Samsung T9 SSD Formatted as NTFS with 145GB of free space on Windows 11 latest version and Chrome latest version. - gthomascraig5 months agoExplorer | Level 3
Sure.
This time the client sent me a folder of files. But the error is the same.
Tried Resuming.... -But instantly fails again. As if the link is no longer active.
This is typical with both single file download links and folders. Any big files will nearly finish and then crash.

Hey gthomascraig, thanks for the added info!
I reinstated the link in my initial response, can you try again?
Also, I'd love to have a visual of what you mentioned. Can you grab a screenshot of the error message when you see it, and send it over to me? You can click the camera-like icon in order to attach it here.🤓

Hi Megan thanks for the reply. This is an issue that occurs regularly when downloading a single large file from a single shared download link from a client. I am not using the dropbox app. I am either inside the latest version of Firefox or Chrome. I experience the issue while uaing both. I'm on the latest version of windows. I'm on a high speed fiber connection (LAN) and have no issues downloading large files from Google Drive or WeTransfer or IceDrive etc..
This is a Dropbox problem that has existed for years.
And the worst part is...it will download 80% of the file and then stall out so not only do I not have a file but an hour of time or more wasted as well because you can never be confident it will finish.
Please note*
the article you linked about the dev console of my browser goes to a page that doesn't exist anymore.
