How to view previews of online-only files on desktop (like how you can in the mobile app)? - macOS
I'm trying to figure out how to see previews, specifically of .jpeg online files, on my mac desktop. I use Dropbox almost exclusively for photo management and it's frustrating not even being able to ...

I received an email from Dropbox. I had to turn on a setting in the admin (we have dropbox teams) so that when Dropbox was quit and then restarted, a message came up to update the app.
The app update actually moves the Dropbox files to a new location on your computer.
Happy to report the update has fixed the issue!

Hey CharlotteR
I'm glad that you received an update to solve the issue.
It goes over my understanding limit figure out why Dropbox support doesn't reply to this thread if they have the solution.
Could you be so kind to share the version number that you have installed?
Thank you.

And this is the email I received to update.

Hey CharlotteR,
I want to thank you because you've been 10 thousand times more helpful than Dropbox Support did.
What is really crazy is that you have v.174 while i already had v.176 and still doesn't work.
I'm so disappointed on how the just ignored this thread and the issue itself. - CharlotteR3 years agoCollaborator | Level 8
@massimilianogrieco no worries, I know how frustrating these issues are.
I actually have Dropbox Business / Teams so maybe that's the difference?
- massimilianogrieco3 years agoHelpful | Level 6
Hey CharlotteR, we are on Dropbox Business as well, we are a Team of around 20 people, each one of us experiencing the same issue.
fun fact is that I downloaded your specific version, and after re-syncing again, Dropbox somehow autoupdated my app to v176.3.5024 and I still have this issue.
Unfortunately, I'm having the feeling that Dropbox doesn't realise the level of the problems they are causing with issue, especially if they kind of fixed it, but completely abandoned this thread.
BenDBX, can you please provide some answers? - HappyTales3 years agoHelpful | Level 6
I'm also experiencing these problems.
I'm on build 174.4.5569
Mac OS Ventura 13.3.1 (a)
I installed the latest updated, which moved my Dropbox files, and I thought this had fixed things. Indeed, all offline files that have been shared with me (so that appear inside my "FionaL" folder) have the thumbnails showing.
However, I still don't see any thumbnails at all in my team folder.
Dropbox team, are you aware that there are still issues to fix?
- HappyTales3 years agoHelpful | Level 6
FWIW, thumbnails are also showing correctly in my personal account, so it seems to be a Teams issue.
- CharlotteR3 years agoCollaborator | Level 8
I was wrong... the issue is not fixed. Or rather, it's partly fixed.
Previously, the thumbnails would not display even if downloaded, but now they do load once the file has been synced locally.
However, images/files that are "online only" are still not displaying thumbnail previews.
This is in my Teams Dropbox account.
It is working correctly in my personal dropbox account.

Hey Max and Charlotte,
It's a complete disaster as far as I can see. Still no solution on the 'old' Dropbox app so working with offline files is not possible. And did you read the comments about the new Dropbox app and location of your files? That doesn't encourage me to install it, what are your experiences?
All the best!

Kirepan the file location change wasn't too bad actually, pretty seamless process! I haven't read any comments about it but my personal experience was fine.
Definitely agree that the thumbnail issue still needs to be addressed.
- HappyTales3 years agoHelpful | Level 6
Kirepan My upgrade experience was also fine. Yes, it moved the files, but that didn't cause any issues. It appears to have fixed the offline-only thumbnails on my personal Dropbox folder, but we still have the same issue with no thumbnails for offline-only files on the Team folder.

@CharlotteR thank you for your reply. So, to be sure you don's experience any of the issues like Spotlight doesn't work or searching in finder doesn't work due to the new location of the files?
Thanks!

@HappyTales, thank you for your reply 😀 So, to be sure you don't experience any of the issues like Spotlight doesn't work or searching in finder doesn't work due to the new location of the files?

Kirepan No, search in both Finder and Spotlight are still working as expected. Just those darned online-only previews!
- Kirepan3 years agoHelpful | Level 6
Great to hear this! Now we wait for a fix so we can see those previews again.

I cant believe previews on Ventura are still not working.
Where on dropbox.com can we find the latest release version number?
- pizzamargherita3 years agoHelpful | Level 6So, the community manager has directed me here since this is a specific topic for macOS. Online only previews for ventura are not working at all. Let's see if a fix shows up soon...
@ last guy, there is no way to quickly discover which is the latest version online (which is weird to me since we can quickly tell which version we are on) but I went through the hassle of uninstalling and reinstalling the whole thing from the web a few days ago, and it's the same version I was on:176.4.5108 - Arnau Ros3 years agoNew member | Level 2

I have the same specs and you and the same problem. I really hope Dropbox fixes this soon but I am not holding out hope! It seems to have been going on for years.

Same here 178.4.4811, w/ osx 12.6.1. I'm a creative professional who, without icon preview available, can no longer use dropbox to store my work assests. None of the answers to this question have been satisfying. Can someone recommend an alternative to dropbox, which allow on-line only files to display thumbnails?
- steve divers3 years agoHelpful | Level 5
This is most disappointing. Its been weeks and still no response from DropBox??!
When are we going to be able to see thumbnails of online images using finder?
