I spoke with a team member who was able to look into this. This issue occurs when the drive is not formatted correctly. Specifically, Dropbox is unable to read the external drive's UUID. The steps that they provided are below:
1. Navigate to disk utility and look at your external drive to see if it has a UUID
2. Re-format your drive and then check if the UUID shows up correctly (from step [1]). If so you will be able to proceed with your backup normally.
We can also get you on a support ticket if you need further assistance.

Ben

Thanks for looking into this! I really appreciate it. So about what yous aid with looking for the UUID, do i go to disk utility and look for UUID? If so then i cant find anything that says that. (Screenshot below). Also how would i re-format the drive on mac?

I don't see a UUID in your screenshot, but I was able to view the UUID of my drive by clicking on Apple Symbol (top left) > About this Mac > More Info > System Report > Hardware > Storage. I don't personally have an external drive, but I believe it will show there.
Best,
Ben

Thanks for trying these troubleshooting steps. At this point, I believe it makes the most sense to get you on a support ticket. Would you mind if we reached out via email?
