Problems syncing and getting Dropbox to recognize deleted files

I keep getting messages that my Dropbox account is over the 2 GB limit. I've removed several folders and file from Dropbox to my desktop to make room, but for some reason Dropbox hasn't recognized it. I also pulled the same files and folders from my local Dropbox folder and I can't get it to sync with the online version. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm using a MacBook Pro with a Firefox browser.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Shared folders take up space on your account vwagner

Have you tried removing your access from them to see if your space is freed up then?

I deleted most of my folders except shared folders. I also removed some files, but I kept some. But the system doesn't seem to acknowledge my deleted folders. That's why I'm at such a loss of what could be going on.

What does your plan tab show in regards to your quota breakdown vwagner ?

Also, how large are the shared folders you kept?
