Upload hangs at 283 of 284 items on Windows 10

This information is not required, but it makes it easier for our Community members and support team to help you.

Device Dell laptop
Operating System/Browser (if using the web) Windows 10
Syncing Status "Uploading 283 of 284 items"

I'm fairly new to Dropbox. I'm trying to use it to back up my Thunderbird Email database, which is almost 15GB. I upgraded to a Personal account. I quickly found that trying to upload the whole DB fails, so I've been uploading folders at a time. I selected multiple folders and files to try to simplify the process, to a total of 296 files in 49 folders, totaling 418MB. Some of these were empty, so they didn't upload. A couple of folders were fairly large (15MB, 18MB), but it seemed to be working. But for the last 15 minutes it's been hung up saying "Uploading 283 of 284 items, 11 seconds left." Should I just cancel it out, and hope the 284th file is isn't significant?

Welcome to the community Dave! Dave-in-Decatur

It’s usually best not to cancel, since Dropbox is likely stuck on one specific file. First, open the Dropbox desktop app and check for any sync issues so you can see which item is holding things up

If it still sits at “283 of 284” with no error, try Pause syncing, then Resume, and if needed quit and reopen Dropbox (or restart your computer). Dropbox will pick up where it left off. This link will give you more insights into how to remedy sync issues.

Let us know how this works for you and report back

Thanks. I'm using the Dropbox Web page, not the app, and I couldn't see any Pause or Resume, only a rather alarming Cancel All. The closest I could get to quitting and reopening was to reload the Web page. It didn't resume after that, just took me to the folder I was in. Is there any way to see a count of files in this folder and its subfolders? Like I said, I guess I'll just have to hope that file wasn't important.

Hi Dave-in-Decatur, when you were uploading the database, was Thunderbird open at the same time?

I do the same with my own Thunderbird backup, using a third party extension in Thunderbird to create the backup, and don't get any errors.

Thanks. Yes, TB is open ... didn't think about that. 🙄 Might be best to delete the whole thing, shut down TB, and start over. What's the extension you use?

Yes, keeping Thunderbird open would keep part of the database open, and thus make Dropbox unable to upload it, even if the files were in the Dropbox folder.

While I can't state the name of the extension here, let's just say that it's a tool that helps to import and export messages and profiles on Thunderbird. This should help you to locate it with an internet search.
