352 TopicsHow to safely remove shared folder from hard drive, owned by a student who graduated and left?
I am a professor at University of Florida (I need to use my personal email here, it never worked with UF email). All my graduate students and I all use Dropbox. Each student has a project folder shared with me, so that when they graduate I have access to the files for future use. Now, if a new student comes, and I pass the previous student computer to him/her, the project folder is still in the computer. How can we safely remove that shared folder from the hard drive and keep them on the web (and my computer)? The old student UF account is disabled so the files cannot be made online only by the old student (and he left anyways). I can access the folder on that pc with my UF account. I can delete the folders manually, which should be safe since in my UF account my dropbox folder is synced, not theirs. But would would happen if the old student decides to come back to work for me as a post doc (or it was a master student who wanna work as a Phd student) some time in the future, their UF account is reactivated, and the PC is given back to them? would the project folder be lost? Device Lenovo IdeaPad 5i (maybe 9 months old and bug free) Operating System/Browser (if using the web) Win11 Dropbox App Version (if using the app) I'm using Chrome browser, but fwiw my Android phone app is v.446.2.4. I'm most interested in getting sharing via browser sorted out, but fwiw I'm likewise having no luck sharing from the phone app either Syncing Status up to date Question or Issue I have had my Basic (free plan) Dropbox account for more than ten years. Only rarely have I needed to share files or folders, but in the past I've successfully created links so specific folders could be viewed by another party without any issues. But if it matters, it's been several years since I shared that link, and only rarely along the way was that person needing to access it. That party reports that link no longer works, but even if it did work, I'd be deleting it anyway. Suffice to say, that old now nonworking public link is irrelevant. Now, I'm trying to start fresh with a new view-only link that only one party can access. If it matters, I've changed computers that sync with the Dropbox cloud a few times over the years, and each time I've successfully set up the new device to sync. And no issues at all with syncing with my current advice. I set up Dropbox on this Lenovo device several months ago and have had zero issues. Currently, I'm trying to prepare/share a Dropbox link to enable that same party to view-only the very small pdf files in a folder. From what I can tell, Dropbox security rules may have changed for shares in the past ten years. For instance, I'm pretty sure my party didn't need to have their own Dropbox account login to be able to view the contents from a link I shared back then. Regardless, today I don't want to share a wide open public link with them. My goal is to share a link that only they can open. And from what I gather, for that to happen, my other party needs to have a Dropbox login associated with the email I'll be sending the link to. No worries, I'm having them set up their login/pw so they'll be all ready to field the link that I'll send them. But now I see no way to create said link to share. From all I've read, it looks like my entire account has been blocked from sharing, for every file or folder I try results in some sort of failure. Since I'm a Basic user, I cannot even get to Dropbox Support to report this so they can investigate, so I hope someone here can help me sort this out! I'm 99% positive all the files in the folder in question aren't compromised in any way. I've got plenty of capacity in my Dropbox. Other than random daily syncs of very few small file updates, I haven't burdened Dropbox's bandwidth. I'll try to describe what happens when I attempt to set up a share (view only)... In Dropbox account Settings, under Sharing I have defaults set for 'only people invited' and 'can view'. When I hover over the folder I want to share and go to the 3 dots for More, with Manage Permissions I first click the link for viewing gear. When I click the link to create link, I get warning box with "Can’t share file Error in call to API function /2/sharing/alpha/create_shared_link_with_settings: We’ve interrupted your sharing activity because your files might contain phishing content." I've verified all files are phishing-free. Plus I see this regardless of the folder I try this on. And there's just no way that every file I have is somehow tagged as a phishing file. Back to hovering and doing 3 dots... With Share, Share with Dropbox, I get a popup that says "Couldn’t complete share We’ve interrupted your sharing activity. For details or to contact support, read..." Again, I've vetted my files plus I cannot reach Dropbox Support because I'm on the Basic plan. I've looked all over my laptop just to make sure I don't have something that might be causing a conflict with Dropbox, and I come up with nothing. Since it seems I get these symptoms for every folder and file I try, I'm convinced my account must be overall locked out or whatnot. Plus with all the attempts, I'm sure all those tries just keep it locked up. Can someone please give me some ideas on how to get this situation corrected? Frankly, the content I need to share is becoming a time-sensitive situation for us. Plus I want to fix this Sharing thing for future use. I'd much more be using Dropbox for more than just syncing files to cloud backup if I could at least do basic tasks like Sharing. I'm all ears and standing by to provide additional info as needed. I moved to Windows11 on a new laptop and cannot see 3 of 20 folders in Dropbox from Explorer. I can see them on my old laptop File Explorer and can also see them in Dropbox on my browser on my new laptop.Solved46Views0likes4CommentsI see a lot of selective sync conflicts, after the Windows desktop app randomly logged me out.
Hi, today when I turned on my computer (Windows 11) the dropbox app had logged me out without me doing anything, out of the blue. I logged back in just for the app to start syncing over 2.5TB from scratch, which was already annoying, but the worst part came when out of nowhere a lot of conflicts due to selective sync start appearing when there were none yesterday. I have worked on my folders through the years, trying to have everything well organized and I use to follow a folder structure but never under the same route since windows would already warn me anyways if that were the case, but seemingly dropbox is too dumb to follow the folder hierarchie and now there are such selective sync conflicts all over the place. Not only that, the dropbox folder under windows explorer is not showing the whole folder structure, which is still there when I enter my dropbox account in the web browser, but not in the dropbox folder under windows explorer, which is only showing the conflict folders that dropbox itself created out of nowhere. Is there any solution to this? It's not the first time I get into a similar situation where the dropbox app has logged me out after an update or similar just to force me sync all my folders and files from scratch, but at least the previous times there weren't any selective sync conflicts as there are now and I'm really considering moving all my files to an external drive and cancel my subscription then dropbox should be a help and not an app that creates errors and issues out of nowhere. Thanks for any advice, but I'm really starting to get tired of these errors that aren't even caused by the users.Solved46Views0likes3CommentsDo online-only files count toward the 300k soft limit of the desktop app syncing?
If I make online only (see screenshot below) 20k files located in a folder, so that it is going to be indexable in windows searches and fast to be found, do those 20k files really count toward the limit of 300k sync files? Under large-deployments dropbox help I found that they say "used with sync", but it is unclear what "used with sync" means, please clarify : Users shouldn't sync more than 300,000 files. This includes online-only files used with sync. Device Windows PC Operating System/Browser (if using the web) Windows 11 Hopefully someone can help with this. I have a full offline sync in place with dropbox. I had a large number of duplicate files within dropbox across multiple Dropbox folders - 145GB worth in fact. With sync paused I deleted this 145GB worth of files on my PC. I now have what I want online stored locally on my PC What I want to know is how do i get this version of the truth to sync online? What I want when I resume sync is the files that have been deleted from my PC will also be deleted from online. What concerns me is when I start sync again it will in fact download all the files I have just deleted. How do I ensure that online now mirrors what I have on my PC, and not the other way round?Solved76Views0likes5CommentsHow can I see all files in Windows explorer without having to download all content first?

Device: Acer Swiftbook 5 Operating System: Windows 11 Dropbox App Version: 234.4.5591 Dropbox Plan: Plus Question or Issue Hi all - I have had Dropbox installed on my laptop for years and it runs just fine. I save everything to it, and everything just saves automatically to Dropbox. I am the only user of the account. This weekend I had to do a reset of my computer and reinstall all apps (the problem was unrelated to Dropbox). Everything is back up and running, and Dropbox is syncing fine etc with almost everything. But in a couple of apps that I use, although it will save just fine, it will only sync with my account if I close the document entirely. It never used to do this, it would sync as soon as I saved it even if I kept the document open to keep working on it. I can't work out from the help pages why it might be doing that. Most thing work as previously and will sync as soon as saved. Any help gratefully received! ThanksSolved103Views0likes8CommentsOld version of files overwriting the latest version on the cloud
Hello community, We are looking for assistance on probable causes and preventive measures to take place following an incident with one of our computers, where the files present in Dropbox folder of the local PC were overwritten to the Dropbox online ( cloud ). Sometime last month, one of the users who works in our team switched on a PC assigned to him after a long duration of more than one month. What happened then was, as soon as the PC got connected to the internet, files and folders present in the local Dropbox folder got written, or synced to the files in the cloud. For a few files that already existed, the 'conflicted copies' have been created with same mentioned in the filename along with a date stamp. But for other files and folders, it has been overwritten and in some cases, the folders which were not even present in the Dropbox cloud, have been uploaded to the cloud. Upon doing net search, we are under the impression that this is not normal behaviour, and Dropbox is designed to not overwrite older versions from local, if present, to the newer or latest version already in the cloud. We require information on (1) Probable causes and (2) Prevention steps. Specifications as below: Dropbox version at the time of incident : Probably 229.4.5197 Windows version and build : Windows 10 Pro (10.0.19044.1741.VER2009 21H2) Sync type: Selective sync Dropbox plan: Free plan for the user, who connected to a Paid ( Professional ) Dropbox Thank you76Views0likes7Comments
