Why was the way screenshots were handled changed?
Me and my friends question what drove the people behind this software to break something intentionally like that?
I work as a Quality Assurance expert, and can only see this change as sabotage.
When I press "PrtSc" I want the image to be copied into my clipboard. The fact that it was saved into the screenshots folder wasn't always desired, but I could deal with it (always cleaned up that folder once a month). But now that doesn't happen. I get so many extra steps, and if I opt out of it, I'm left with nothing.
Sure, I could just install a different software for making screenshots, but that seems so stupid to do, given what worked before!
We have an additional fix for issues with "show floating thumbnail" out in V224, which is available as of April 29. As far as we know right now, this resolves all versions of this issue. Thanks for everyone who raised the issue and provided so much detail so we can resolve!

With the discontinuation of Capture, they're moving some of that functionality into the Dropbox application itself.

Then change the settings in Preferences so it does that. Turn off the quick actions and link generation and the image will be copied to the clipboard.

Hi FarelTheGiraffe -- Thanks so much for this feedback. I'm on the Product team here at Dropbox, and I'd love to hear more.
First, as Rich mentioned, with the discontinuation of Capture, we're working to bring aspects of Capture to our core Dropbox experience on Desktop -- specifically, support for Screenshot Markups. We definitely don't want this new functionality to disrupt how you've been using screenshot backups. So I'd love to learn more about the issues you're seeing.
We’ve added a new toggle to the Screenshot settings that will allow you to control whether a link is auto-copied, or the clipboard behavior remains unchanged. If you'd like to toggle this off, you can access it in your Preferences on the Desktop app (Account Menu > Preferences > Screenshots).
Also, to make sure I'm following: are your screenshots saving to your "Screenshots" folder successfully? If not, I want to hear more, so our team can address any potential issues there. Can you confirm?
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Cheers,
Ryan

Something about this breaks the way screenshots work in macOS. "Show floating thumbnail" keeps getting reactivated with macOS' screenshot function. According to this reddit thread, uninstalling dropbox fixes the problem:

Apologies for my emotional response. I was very annoyed at this change, and did not find things that intuitive (the buttons say what they do when enabled, but there's no mention of what's being done when they're disabled). Eventually I figured it out by experimenting with the settings (before reading the advise given here), and now I have indeed recreated what I had before.
Still, I do wish to make note that during experimentation, I had the screenshot's URL be saved into the clipboard, instead of the image even when disabling the "Copy link to clipboard" thing. This did not happen again after after switching back and forth, and I couldn't recreate it, but I do wish to make note of it , and say that it is something to look into as a potential bug.

I wish to make note that the same "URL in clipboard despite disabling" did occur on my Desktop PC as well, and similarly, switching it back and forth took care of it.
Not as much of an issue, but none the less something of a bug. - xam9 months agoHelpful | Level 6
I'm also seeing this conflict with "Show floating thumbnail". Please fix it Dropbox!

oh man me too. if it wasnt for that reddit thread i wouldnt have even known it was happening to others or that it was dropbox influenced somehow. but its a pain in the ass, the stupid thumbnail takes ages to go away and meanwhile, my screenshot file is not available to use. please dropbox, look into this bug you seem to have caused and fix it! i didnt update ANYTHING on my mac in months but the bug still happened to me as a dropbox user at around the same time it happened to everyone else. and yes, my dropbox screenshots feature is disabled and has been so for 8 years.

Same thing happening here. I'm going to to try to figure out how to report this as a bug.

Hi, folks!
First, Melissa90879397924, xam, availablelight -- Thanks so much for flagging all of this!
To make sure I'm not missing anything, the issue you're having is: After disabling the "Show floating thumbnail" option in your MacOS screenshot settings, it's being re-enabled (i.e., the MacOS thumbnail is popping up again) randomly; and this seems to only happen when you've got Dropbox running?
I've flagged that issue with the team, and we're already digging in! We hope to have a fix for this shipped soon -- I'll keep you posted!
If I've missed any other/related issues here, let me know, and I'll make sure to pass those along.
Cheers,
Ryan
