I just wanted to clarify that this is the way shared folders work. They use space in each member’s account unless they're part of the same Dropbox team account. In this case, you could use shared links and file requests instead of a shared folder.
As for your last query, can you clarify which platform you're using? Is this for the website, for example, or the desktop/mobile app instead? I'm only asking because it should already be an option on the website.
