Hi dstimac,
Walter is correct, when the other person share a 'Folder' with you, the whole Folder is shared to you and will take up the same size on your end.
Is it possible to communicate with your client, letting them know you do not have enough space to receive such a huge Folder, instead could they create a new folder for you, and share only what is necessary with you, if that is possible.
From your end, if you no longer need access to the folder they shared, you can go to the Shared Dropbox Folder, right click on the Folder, hover your mouse over <Dropbox>, select <Manage folder access> scroll and find your name, select <Remove my access>. This will free up the space taken up on your Dropbox limit, files downloaded will remain on your computer, but they will stop syncing from thereon. You Dropbox account limit should be back to the state before your client shared the folder with you, and technically your account should start syncing and function like normal.
Hope this help.
