storage space reduced

Just discovered my free storage space was reduced from 5GB to 2GB.  No warning.  (A backup file is updated daily, so it's not from lack of use.) Why?   I am deleting files but need more time.  How long before Dropbox delete files in excess of allotted space?  And what rules does it use to do this?

Dropbox doesn't delete files. You simply can't sync while you're over quota.
