Sync icons no longer appear in Finder after upgrading

If I edit a file, a empty cloud icon appears, then disappears.
Got it. I guess I was confused by this:
"A file or folder with no icon means that it has been opened either by double-clicking or through a third-party application and synced. "
None of the tens of thousands of files in my Finder have an icon. But I haven't double-clicked all of them and I'm not sure what opened via third-party application means.
What I'm gathering is that before the upgrade, synced files were noted with an icon, but after the upgrade, synced files have no icon. It's a confusing switch but I get it now.

3 years agoNo worries, this is a change for users who have the Dropbox folder on the CloudStorage location.
If you need any further assistance in the future, please let me know.

Hi Jay,
I'm having sync icon problems with my mac on Ventura 13.2.1.
I have not been able to see any of the sync icons such as available offline, online-only, sync in progress, etc. I can see that my files are syncing correctly, but just not displaying their appropriate finder icons. I've troubleshooted a few different things now and have had no luck.
Thanks!

the basic gist, which Dropbox has not done a very good job of explaining, is that there are no more sync icons. If your files are syncing correctly, you shouldn't see anything, as far as I understand it. Only when something is wrong should you see something.

That's quite a disappointment. That's a very useful feature to have. Hmm. So I suppose downgrading the OS may be the only solution to have the finder icons for now unless DB makes changes.

Hi Jay,
Yes, I have. No changes after installing again.

Hey Cody_P, just to confirm, are syncing icons missing from all the files in your Dropbox folder?
If you right/control click a file and choose "make available offline" or "make online-only", do you see any change?
Also, what's the sync status of your Dropbox app and which version do you have installed?
You can see this info by hovering over your Dropbox icon.
- Cody_P3 years agoExplorer | Level 3
Hi Hannah,
That's correct. All syncing icons are missing. For example, when I offline, there's no green check mark.
Sync status is that all files are up to date. I'm on version 170.4.5895.
Thank you.

Thanks for the update here, Cody.
You mentioned that you've tried a few troubleshooting steps, can you let me know what you tried?
And if you haven't already, can you also restart your computer to see if that helps?
- Cody_P3 years agoExplorer | Level 3
Sure. So I've logged out and back in to my dropbox, updated DB (without uninstalling), and restarted my computer multiple times. I've removed the dropbox folder from my finder favorites and re-added. I've disabled and re-enabled the dropbox "finder extensions" button in my system preferences. I think that's it.
I haven't done a full uninstall and re-install yet as I was hoping to avoid having to re-offline lots of large files. But I could try that overnight.

Hi Hannah,
Granted DB full disk access but no differences with the sync icons.
I'm going to do the full re-install tonight. Will let you know if that works!

Thanks, Cody, will be looking forward to your reply!

So it seems as though granting full disk access did the trick. I think it must not have fully refreshed permissions until I did a system restart over the weekend (which I had thought I had done right away).
Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey Scissoir and Glue, sorry to hear about this.
Can you please clarify your device's OS version and the version and status of the Dropbox desktop app as shown in your menu bar at the moment? - Cody_P3 years agoExplorer | Level 3
Also chiming back in here as I just saw Scissoir and Glue's last message as well. The icons were working for me but have mainly disappeared again. They came and went a couple times but they've been gone now for at least a week now unfortunately.

Hey everyone! Just to make sure we’re on the same page, can you please let me know if you’ve all already tried to reinstall your Dropbox app and also, refresh your Finder?
Also, Scissoir and Glue, can we open a ticket for you, and investigate this further by looking into your Dropbox account?

I'd love to see a screenshot of what the icons are SUPPOSED to look like in Finder. Can anyone share?

Hi dropitlikeitshot1, I hope you're doing well!
You can see more, in regards to the syncing icons, in this Help Center article.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know!

Hi Nancy,
Yes. I've re-installed the app and refreshed finder. The thing that temporarily worked for me was when I granted dropbox full disk access and then restarted my system. I had the icons for a short while but then they disappeared after another system restart.

Hi Cody_P, if you're still facing the same issue, can you try an advanced re-install, please?

Hi Megan,
Sure. I can give that a go.
