217.4.4417 breaks screenshot pasting feature on Windows

A new update of Dropbox was pushed to me today.
It added a new set of options related to screenshots.

Show quick action after screenshot... I dislike this, I preferred just getting the notification, but at least I can turn this off.

When Screenshot is ready... "Copy link to clipboard" or "Copy Picture to clipboard"

I typically take a screenshot by pressing print screen, then pasting the screenshot in Discord or my art software, I REQUIRE this functionality to maintain my productivity.
but I also like to have the image saved to dropbox as a backup.

With "Copy Link to Clipboard", well, it's a link, Art software isn't going to know what to do with that, and discord doesn't inline images from Dropbox very well, so I'd still rather have an image in the clipboard.
The 2nd option, "Copy Picture to Clipboard", well, when I try and paste, nothing happens.

I want a 3rd option... "Leave Clipboard alone", just, whatever print screen normally does, just let it happen. Just Save the image to my Screenshots folder in Dropbox, and leave it at that, like it used to be.
Is that too much to ask?

Note: I do pay for Dropbox.

  • I think I have a new problem...

No there hasn't been an update, it's still V219.4.4463, but when I press the Print Screen button, Dropbox seems to... not do anything, Even though I have the Save Screenshots to Dropbox check turned on, it's not doing that.
As far as I can tell, it hasn't been saving screenshots for a few days, so this persisted through PC reboots.

EDIT: And after typing this, it's started working again.
I'd been toggling the settings on the screenshot page on and off with no effect. The last thing I did before it started working again was turn on "Ask to backup external drives" in the backup section.

I enabled the history, No it doesn't show in there.
I'll include a bit more information in my response to Ryan.

Hi Bobingabout -- Thanks for flagging this!

I'm on the Product team here at Dropbox, and I'd love to get some more information, so our team can fix this -- it sounds super frustrating.

You mentioned that some programs (e.g., Telegram) allow you to paste the screenshot from your clipboard, but others (e.g., Discord) don't. To confirm: are you seeing that with the same screenshot (i.e., pasting into Discord does nothing, but pasting immediately afterward in Telegram works)? Or was this for different instances?

Also, if you're able to: can you enable the "Show quick action" setting, and set your default to "Copy link to clipboard"? When you take a screenshot, the quick action should allow you to copy the image to your clipboard. I'd like to know if that works, or if you still run into the same issue.

Let me know, and we can go from there!

    Cheers,

    Ryan

Which pieces of software are able to paste an image from the clipboard, and which don't work?

Could you temporarily enable the clipboard history, then take a screenshot  on your machine and choose the second option.

After that, could you check the clipboard history in Windows using the Windows key + V in an area you can paste and let me know if the screenshot appears there?

No, it basically acts like the clipboard is empty.
I tried pasting in a few different pieces of software.
Some do paste an image, Most of them behave like there's nothing to paste.

For example, Discord and Steam chat act like the clipboard is empty. Telegram does actually paste an image.

All the art software I use, including Photoshop act like the clipboard is empty.

Hi Bobingabout, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

If you attempt to paste the image into another app, does the image paste when using the second option, aside from your app and Discord?

This will help me to assist further!
