Cannot export passwords from Dropbox Passwords because of a comedy of errors

Device
My PC, then Pixel 8 Pro, then iPad Pro (M1)
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Windows 10 / Mozilla Firefox, then Android 16, then iPadOS 17.0
Dropbox App Version/Browser Version
Dropbox Passwords Extension v3.32.0, then Dropbox Passwords (Android) v278.23, then Dropbox Passwords (iOS/iPadOS) vSomething (I actually don't know how to get it to list the version on iPad)

Question or Issue
I cannot export a CSV from Dropbox Passwords because the extension won't open. I am clicking the button and it does nothing. Additionally, there is no option on Android to save the exported CSV to local storage (instead of a share sheet item), and the exported CSV had numerous errors that I had to fix manually before importing to 1Password. It is unethical to shut down a password manager in this horrendous state.

I am aware that you have already disabled the extension. However, there is no way to launch the desktop UI anymore, which is necessary to export passwords. This prevents customers from offboarding Dropbox Passwords. Please restore enough of the Dropbox Passwords extension to allow users to download an unencrypted password export.

The Android app's CSV export opens the share sheet, which on a fully updated Pixel 8 Pro does not allow me to store the shared CSV in local storage. The only options are to upload to cloud storage or e-mail it to myself, both of which are bad ideas that will likely result in unintended retention of unencrypted password dumps. The iPad version of Dropbox Passwords does not have this issue and can save to local storage without sending unencrypted data to the cloud, but you still need to advise people NOT to use the (default!!!) iCloud Drive save location.

The CSV file export is not a valid CSV. When I import it into 1Password every line of every note of every item I import becomes a separate item with that line as the title and no contents. This is because your CSVs do not use a quotation mark as string delimiter for multi-line text fields, such as the notes column, at least not if they start with a newline. If the notes field has a single quote in it, it'll get wrapped up in double quotes, but not other fields, some of which do have single quotes. I am now manually fixing up a 596 line CSV file because of this.

Thanks for the update here and I'm glad to see that you were able to resolve the issue in Firefox and managed to export your passwords.

Of course, I totally understand where you're coming from and I'm happy I could help, but I also passed your comments and feedback along to our team.

If you need anything else, don't hesitate to reach back out.

    Have a great day!

    1. Apologies for the "Hate This" name. I just have less than fond memories of long ago when Google would pawn me off to user forums for every single question/feedback/bugreport.
    2. Amazing but true:  I installed your extension in Cromium - which sort of failed - BUT something about it fixed the extension window in my Firefox. 😯  Once Firefox got the authorization pop-up, the screen looked different, it had an avatar, and I was able to export my passwords. 🤔

In general, the password manager worked pretty well. I'm going to miss it. Won't miss the export dance (sorry). Thanks.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues exporting your passwords from the Dropbox Passwords app and Passwords extension, HateThis.

I'd be happy to investigate this for you, if you'd like, but in order to do so, can you please send me a screenshot of how the app and the extension look on your end? What do you see on your end, instead of the steps in the article?

Of course, please make sure that no sensitive info appears on the screenshot.

Have you tried doing it from a different browser, like Chrome or Edge?

Yeah, for me the export instructions are worthless. No gear icon in the Android app, no avatar in the Firefox extension, and I'm not going to 1Password. This sucks.

Hi kmeisthax - thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on this and flagging the issue you've outlined as well.

Just to make sure we've got this right, can you confirm that you're following these steps to import your Dropbox Passwords to 1Password?

Let us know more and we'll take it from there.
