I joined a Dropbox team and now all my files are shared with them

I joined a professional team and it gave them access to all my personal folders and files. I didn’t realise that joining a team would do this, I assumed my folders would still only be accessible by me.

I deleted the folders but when I tried to permanently delete the files it said I do not have permission. I do not have permission to delete my own folders and files????? Apparently it needs to be admin which is a colleague who I do not want to access the information.

How did anyone think this was a good idea? Over a decade with Dropbox, and I can lose my account with a couple of clicks? Guess I'll be looking for an alternative to Dropbox.

Hi Whocares2, as you've joined a Dropbox team, you would need to get in contact with the team admin in order for them to remove you from the team by converting your account to a Basic personal plan away from the team.

This is because they technically own your Dropbox account now once it's part of the team, so they need to the person to remove you from the team.

I thought someone was sharing a folder with me, but turns out it was one of these team things. Now my entire account is moved into a "team," it's trying to resync all my files, and I don't seem to have access to customer support anymore despite my paid account. I can't even get the guy who sent the invite to take me off of it because he's on a religious holiday. This is incredibly frustrating.

Surely it's easier to start a new team with a new account/spin off email from your current pro account instead? I can't seem to see an option for this though.

That is part of the onboarding. You have to almost force it to use the email you are already using to join the team. It asks, multiple times, to confirm you wish to join with your current email.

No. It stays the same the emails just change.

I have also been invited to join a Team.

Why would this option not be the other way around? Surely it's easier to start a new team with a new account/spin off email from your current pro account instead? I can't seem to see an option for this though.

Can you help, as I have lots of websites linked to updraft for backups. If I join the team invite and click 'yes' for a new account email and password, will I then have to change all the admin details for those websites, along with other people I have shared files with? Or does everything stay the same, even though I'll need to set up a different email and password for this new 'personal' account?

Hi RPGRAT, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

When you join a Dropbox team, you get the option to merge your account there, or to create a new account and keep files under a separate email address.

It sounds like you chose to merge your account, which means that the team admin now technically owns your account and all files within, including the option to permanently delete files.

I'd recommend contacting the team admin directly to ask them to convert your account back to a personal account away from the team using these steps.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.
