I currently have a dropbox basic account.  I have just bought a new computer for the first time since the device limit was introduced - I have more than three devices currently grandfathered to my account.

 

My understanding is that to install Dropbox on my new computer, I'll need to sign out of all but two other devices or upgrade my account.  Is this correct?

 

I'm trying to decide whether to subscribe to one of the plans, which I understand offers unlimited devices. If do I upgrade my account, but later decide to downgrade back to a basic account do I 

 

a) Keep the extra space I currently have (eg from referrals, dropbox quest back in the day etc)?

b) Get signed out of all devices? Keep access on devices signed in at the point of downgrade? Something else?

 

If two user accounts on one device are both signed into the same dropbox account, does that count once or twice towards the device limit? 

 

At the moment, I'm signed into a computer predominantly used by my wife - she could have her own dropbox basic account and a shared folder with me - but she would presumably only have 2Gb of space - so what would happen if I put more than 2Gb of material in that shared folder (I have significant bonus space in my free account)

Hi @bobbobbobbob, thanks for posting today.

 

If you're on a Dropbox Basic plan, you'd need to remove all unused devices so only 2 remain, in order to add a third device. Note that multiple logins to the same account on one computer would count as a separate device each. 

 

If you upgrade to a paid plan and then downgrade, you'd keep any devices added onto your account during the paid period. Additionally, the quota you earned during the Basic plan would remain.

 

If you share a folder with a user and add more files than their quota can handle, then their account would stop syncing, and they wouldn't be able to view the new files.

What do Dropbox user levels mean?
