Dropbox Backup
91 TopicsThe Dropbox Backup feature is not complete
According to the description, Backup "that your content is safe and recoverable it if things go wrong". Recovery was never actually finished when building out this product. 1. .zip's error happens often 2. It cannot manage large files to be exported in any reasonable way 3. Browser timeouts happen 4. There is no premium or advanced method to get data out. Right now, Backup is great for customer retention because if you lose your drive or laptop, the only place the files will be sorted are in Dropbox, which requires a yearly renewal. My idea. 1. Offer a premium method to export the data to help the bottom line. 2. Build in a better download either through the browser, or the agent that is already on my machine. 3. Allow a new external drive to be mounted to export all of the data through the agent. 4. Allow me to order a hard drive at cost, with the data backed up.Solved2KViews3likes8CommentsMove folder from Dropbox Backup to the cloud storage
Hi, how can I move folder(s) from Dropbox Backup to the cloud storage root? There is not copy/move option. There is only a download button but in my case the folder that I need to get is about 300GB and it isn't possible to download since Dropbox Backup tries to compress the files before downloading them. As a result, it cannot compress the file due to its size and it bursts. Is there any other way to be able to use the files that are in the dropbox backup? I recently backed up 200-GB of files from an external hard drive that was getting old. I used the DropBox Backup feature figuring it would be easier to simply use a "restore" feature rather than manually copying files over. I now have a new drive but have found that DropBox backup doesn't actually have a "restore" feature despite market the ability to "restore a new computer from backup". From what I can see you have to manually select files and download them (what I was trying to avoid). Dropbox also forces the files to be ZIPd, which it can't do for 200GB of files. So now my files are literally stuck on Dropbox with no way to get them off. Seems like a completely useless feature? Does anyone know a workaround or am I going to have to manually download 200GB of files in small batches?2.3KViews3likes8CommentsUnable to stop or turn off desktop backup [SOLVED]
A while ago I turned on the new 'backup desktop/documents/downloads' feature. Now I want to turn it off, but I can't. There's no obvious 'turn this feature off' button. All the instructions I've seen point to a 'manage backups' or 'import' tab, which I don't have. I've upgraded to the latest Beta (Win 10), uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted several times and nothing. I've just set Dropbox up again and I have unchecked the 'MY PC' box. But Dropbox is just merrily syncing all my stuff again. It's insane that Dropbox would enable this feature and not give users a simple way to turn the thing off. Does anyone know how I can do it?Solved16KViews3likes44CommentsSince updating to Mac OS 15.2 files and folders do not appear on my desktop
For the past few months I have been using dropbox backup to backup my desktop files and folders. Everything has been working fine until this morning when i updated my OS to Sequoia 15.2 Now my files and folders do not appear on my desktop, although the Desktop folder still seems to be syncing and can be accessed from the shortcuts in the sidebar in Finder. If i drag and drop a file to my desktop it disappears, but can then be found in the desktop folder in finder. Is anyone else experiencing this?610Views2likes5CommentsRestore external drive from Dropbox Backup -- how?
This question specifically concerns the new Dropbox "Backup" functionality, and *not* the well-established normal cloud/sync functions of Dropbox (which have always work pretty well for me). So now I backed up an external hard disk (some 500+ gb of data) to Dropbox Backup -- this worked fine (almost, I needed two attempts but) now I have a backup of that disk on Dropbox Backup. This is nice, but here's my questions: - Showing the folder sizes on the web interface, they are all smaller than those actually on the hard disk (as shown by Finder locally). To double check, I downloaded one of the folders back to my computer again, and there the file sizes match those of the external HDD again. Long story, are the file/folder sizes on the web interface simply off (too small?)? - All progress information provided by the app while backing up, i.e., what it is doing when, how many files of which sizes are left etc. are *completely* off. Ridiculously off. Like "I am at 99%" (or even finished) when just 2/10000 files had been transferred. - Now my most important question. A "backup" (e.g. of an external HDD) is for restoring the disk in case the HDD brakes or is lost, correct? But how the heck can I restore my drive (say, on a new HDD) from Dropbox Backup? I checked and searched but all I can find is the option to download (as zipped folders) from the "Backup" web interface. There doesn't seem to be any option like "restore my disk from backup X". The "download" seems equivalent, but there is a critical limit: you can download only like 25k files at once. So if you chose to backup a disk with a huge picture collection (say 1TB with about 350k files) you'd have a hard time restoring that disk from Dropbox Backup, is this correct? (You'd need to manually start a dozen of zip-folder downloads). Isn't there any simple unsupervised procedure for restoring an external drive no matter what's on it? Any information appreciated!Solved1.6KViews2likes1CommentRemoving My Mac folders from Dropbox
Hello - I have on on-going issue that I need help. I wish to remove the âMy Macâ folders (/Desktop, /Downloads and /Documents directories using a .local folder) from my Dropbox account that got erroneously installed during the set-up of a new computer (running Big Sur 11.1). Unfortunately, I have been unable to disable the "computer backup" feature under my account, preferences, etc. It only says SET UP (but I have already set it up). In addition, I cannot get the device unlinked from dropbox.com when I try that method. All of this is is all being done on the same device where computer backup was set up, but it is still not working. I need some help undoing this. Thank you.1.9KViews2likes3CommentsHow can I download and restore my external hard drive backup data?
Hello Dropbox Team! I backup up an external hard drive with backups beta and my disk failed, and now I have to download all in badges to recover all my disk information, could you please add an option to restore a backup directly to the disk or maybe add the option of having the backup on the Mac finder to just access the files there and copy them to my new external hard drive ?101Views1like1CommentHow to restore backed up files to computer after Windows reinstall?
Hello, My laptop crashed yesterday and I ended up having to reinstall Windows 11. The laptop is up and running again and I am in the painful stage of having to reload all files and programs. First step was I tried to restore my backed up Dropbox files to my laptop. As far as I can tell, all the restore has done is create a DUPLICATE of my backup ONLINE. So itâs essentially doubled my storage use (for the same backup files) and I donât have any of the files on my laptop. See screenshot below. Am I to understand that I will need to MANUALLY download all these files to my laptop? I tried to do that and have already run into the âAttempted to zip too many filesâ error and have figured out that if I need to download them manually, I will have to do so in pieces. I have used Carbonite as a backup program previously and I did not have to manually restore files to a new computer. I had assumed Dropbox Backup Restore was an automatic process as well. Am I missing something? Thanks, Janette792Views1like1Commentattempted to zip too many files error when wanting to download backup
Hi, iv'e backed up my dropbox files and i'm attempting to download them from the backup site. i'm reffering to: https://www.dropbox.com/backup/ when i go to the website and ask to download it, it tells me "Attempted to zip too many files". this made me loose a heart beat, though i know everything is there. i'm relying on this, which i guess was a fatal mistake. iv'e got all of my important files there, and i need them to continue my work - i used this as actual backup for some files, a big mistake đ i know everything is there, but how can i reach it if it can't download them? Thank you in advance.Solved4.8KViews1like8Comments
