thanks. ive actually created a new system now where Carbon Copy Cloner makes a backup (mirror) version of my important local files and folders and dropbox automatically uploads them as online only.
i was having so many issues opening my files using file provider so had to switch back to legacy.
as far as i can tell a lot of pro users have had problems with apple's file provider API.
ive changed the folders to read-only so i cant accidentally open them from the mirror folder and im hoping dropbox will remember to only keep files as online only within those folders so it doesnt take up any room on my internal hard drive.

I've not had any and been on it since Beta. If you are having issues make sure you report it on the appropriate Dropbox Desktop Client Builds | The Dropbox Community thread.

As soon as a file is opened/touched or edited it will download and become offline available. You'll need to manually, I'm afraid, reset them to offline only every so often.
