I rebooted my computer and looks like that solved the issue. No issues now with opening Word documents moved from dropbox to my desktop. Sorry about that.
I do have an external drive backup set-up. I had been moving and copying/pasting Word documents from dropbox to the desktop.

Is there any chance that you have our Backup feature enabled on your device? How exactly are you moving the file?
If you could also include a screenshot of the error you mentioned, that'd be amazing.
