App keeps indexing after moving Dropbox folder with over 1 TB from one disk to another

Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Windows 10
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)
239.4.8301
Syncing Status
Indexing - formerly "Synching"

Question or Issue
I wanted to move the Dropbox to a new larger SSD.
Step 1: Copied with Teracopy all Files to new disk, stopped Dropbox, renamed the drive-name of the Disks - new Disk to F:\\Dropbox\Dropbox - the usual path. Dropbox tried to resynchronize for days, so I stopped. Btw: I also stopped the Windows Antimalware Realtime Protection to support the performance

Step 2: I relocated the old smaller SSD, everything was fine

Step 3: I tried the built-in tool "move Dropbox" - it stopped several times to an "unknown error"

Step 3: I used robocopy to copy again to the new Disk to preserve Time-Stamps. Renamed the Drive-Name to F:\\ - on the first glance everything looked fine.

But now, Dropbox is re-indexing again. Taking some time right now.

What did I do wrong and/or what could I do better?

Thx, Robert

  • Thank You Hannah for your quick reply. Since the first try took a couple of days so I aborted and after the robocopy-attempt on the first look seemed to work but now the re-indexing started again, I was worried. But: Dropbox just "reindexed". That's it. Took some minutes but afterwards it was "all fine". Even testfiles where synched immediately (checked online successfully). So thank you for your support, good to know for may be some time in the future (or hopefully not ;-)). Problem "solved"!

Hi there, RobertSE, thanks for taking the time to post to our Community.

The indexing is probably related to the fact that you have over 1 TB of data, but let's see what we can find.

Can you go through the app's preferences, check the "Sync" tab and let me know if the app shows the correct location for your Dropbox folder?

Also, if you could hover over the Dropbox icon in your system tray to show the app's sync status and send us a screenshot, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance!

I am glad to see you issue is resolved - it's great to hear everything settled down and started working as expected again. And hey, thanks for coming back to update the thread. That follow-up really helps other who might run into similar behavior.

By the way, I'm Theresa 👩‍💻, one of the community managers here at Dropbox HQ. Since you're working with a large Dropbox setup, I'd love to know... what do you usually use Dropbox for? Whether it's work projects, backups or something else - I am always curious to know how people fit Dropbox into their day-to-day!
