I joined a client's folder, but I'm being asked for more Dropbox space to add a file to it.
A client shared their dropbox link with me to upload files and it keeps telling me my personal account is full and to upgrade. I don't want to upgrade my account. The clients have a full account and ...

You need to pay to upgrade or get more space. They have an increase quota, you do not. There paid quota does not benefit you in anyway.
Or, if you need to download only ask for read only shared links or to upload ask for file requests.
