Dropbox uses a ton of hard drive space despite most files being online only
So, I've put ALL my files on online-only because my Mac was running out of space.
In my Mac settings, Dropbox takes up 108 GB currently. Once I actually look at what folders are taking up space it's less than 2 GB (you can see in the screenshot what I mean).
What is taking up all this space?
Is it possible that the hidden Dropbox cache folder is taking up space on your machine?
Try deleting the folder using these steps to see if this helps.

Hey hunterandsarah! If the update youāre referring to is the Dropbox for File Provider one, then itās expected behavior indeed that the cache folder will no longer be visible on the desktop app, even if you choose the option to see hidden files on your computer.
Is it OK, if we log a ticket for you though? This way, our team can double check if thereās a possible workaround you can try in this case.

This was a known workaround for a long time. But since the big Dropbox update earlier this week, the hidden cache file is no longer visible in the Dropbox folder. We used to have to delete the cache file almost daily when doing lots of culling and editing of files within Dropbox. Now my mac is basically out of storage, but I can't just delete the cache folder, because I can't find it. Help!

Hi Unknown abstracts, could you attach a screenshot showing the files and folders in your Dropbox folders with the sync icons visible?

Hi from me too, Unknown abstracts! Just to clarify, did you set your entire Dropbox folder as online-only?
Can you right-click on the Dropbox folder now, go to āGet infoā and send me a screenshot of the next window youāll get?

The dropbox version is v211.4.6008. and Online-only is enabled.

Thanks, Unknown abstracts.
And the Dropbox version?
Also, is the "online-only files on Mac" setting enabled here?

Hi Hannah,
Thanks for replying. My computer OS is macOS ventura 13.5.2. The dropbox syncing is up to date.

Sorry to see that you're having this issue, Unknown abstracts.
What is your computer's OS and version?
Also, what's the version of the Dropbox app and the sync status at the moment?
You can see this info by hovering over your Dropbox icon.
