'Manage Hard Drive Space' folder information not loading on the desktop app preferences

Dropbox Plan
Business Standard
Device
13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-13400F (2.50 GHz)
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Windows 11 home
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)

Question or Issue
When I go through to Sync and Storage and then Manage Hard Drive Space I get the screen appear but no matter how long I leave the screen open it never updates to show the folders, it just constantly has the spinning wheel.

This happens every time I use DropBox and has been for the last 4 weeks.

Any ideas people?

Thanks in advance
James

    Welcome to our Community, JamesCyon.

Let's see what we can find out about this.

Did you notice this issue after some kind of update of the Dropbox app?

How many files do you currently have in your Dropbox folder? Is it possible that they're more than 300K?

If so, can you try to reduce the number of files by using selective sync, to see if the issue persists?

Let me know how it goes!

    Hi Hannah

To be honest I can't remember when it last updated, sorry.🙃

We use DropBox as our server so I would imagine that it is close to 300K files on there, maybe more, is there a way to check the total number?

I did try deselecting some folders and it hasn't changed the issue.

    Thanks

    James

Hi James! Hope you don’t mind me chiming in.

You can right-click on your Dropbox folder directly and open its Properties; you should be able to see the total amount of files this way.

    Thanks Nancy, that worked.

We have a total of 1.4 million files

That's quite a large number of files to sync on a computer JamesCyon - can you try reducing the app's load by using selective sync to remove some additional folders from your device?

Just don't understand why it would stop working when that number of files has not changed drastically in the last 3 years...?

What can I do if I cannot reduce that number, a lot of the folders I have selectively synced to my machine I need access to.

Hi again, James! So, to clarify, you were able to load your files at the “Manage Hard Drive Space” page about a month ago, even though you still had about 1.4 million files on your desktop app, correct?

In general, the 300k files mentioned here is a soft limit and having more than that on your Dropbox app can occasionally cause performance issues.

In this case, one thing that I can perhaps suggest is to reinstall the Dropbox app (without uninstalling first) with the help of this page

Other than that, I'm afraid that there isn't much more we can offer, since having too many files in the local Dropbox folder is most likely the root cause of this issue.

Thanks for the advice Nancy, I will give that a go and see if there is an improvement.

Appreciate everyone's help on this 👍
