My account keeps saying it's full - but it isn't
Hi - I have a 6.3 GB basic account with less that 1.2 GB of data in it, but I keep getting notifications saying the account is full, and it isn't syncing. I've double checked my folders and cleaned out all deleted items, but it makes no difference. I have been unable to contact any sort of support through the website, so am hoping someone might know how to fix this. Thanks.

Not sure if there is a way to tell what percentage of the allotted storage I am using, but I am under the limit now
You can see your storage quota and current usage on your Plan page.

this same behavior is happening to me. I have 22gb in my plan, it says i am using 20gb, but when I look in dropbox online I only have three folders, which is the same as what i have on my computer and they total up to be 65mb of data. I am not using 20gb of data and there is nothing either through the OS or through dropbox's interface that says I am using anything currently other than 65mb of data. I also went in and removed all shared folders.
Something is off in dropbox that it isn't updating the stats correctly. I removed all the files in my directory except these three folders. The files I removed were a total of 4gb and it was that way for greater than 24 hours.

If it says you're using 20GB of space, then you're using 20GB of space. Have you checked your Backups page yet? You likely enabled the backup feature.

Thanks Rich. I disabled backups. I am not sure how it got enabled because I would never want dropbox to do backups for me. I have another service that I use for that. I disabled it on the one offending computer and then deleted the backup.
It would be super helpful if the status screens said something about backup using the space rather than the files in my dropbox folder. Backup is also using a completely different interface outside of the dropbox application. It has a lot of options that are not well reflected in the application.
thanks for the help and hopefully it will clear up the space once the delete completes.

I've had a free account for many years.
I never had any issues with it. It has 4.3GB space and I've never filled it.
It's now saying 5.28GB of 4.3GB is used but there is actually <1GB used.
On Windows Explorer I can see the file details.
It's trying to force me to buy more storage.
Is Dropbox forcing users to upgrade by making the account unusuable?
No matter what is deleted out of dropbox on Desktop, what's online is still the same 5.28GB which doesn't actually exist.
I can understand Dropbox wanting to sell their service rather than giving it away for free but it should be clear and transparent.

My account size has been bouncing around as I try to delete whatever is in the current dropbox.
It's gone up as high as 10GB and as lower as 4.8GB, its now back to 5.6GB.
It seems to be completely out of line with what is actually in Dropbox 594MB.
Very frustrating.
It's seems to be a con to me. Dropbox is making the free account unusable.

Hey Fergal O., thanks for reaching out to our Community.
Did you happen to enable our backup feature at some point?
This would explain your space being taken up. You can take a look at your backups page for more info.
Let me know what you find.

Drop box says it is full but even after deleting a bunch of stuff it still says full I looked at my Plan- drop box list and most of it is regular data only 138mb is shared data. Is there a refresh interval I need to wait for?

If you are in a team it can take a few hours, but, the other thing to just look at is www.dropbox.com/backups.

Thanks Hannah- that was exactly the problem. I could find no trace of that in my account.
It doesn't explain anywhere what is consuming the memory.
I assume this is when I stick in a memory card and for some reason Dropbox opens up and asks to back it up.
I don't even know where or why that was turned on. I don't ever remember allow Dropbox to make requests like that.
It's probably a way of targetting free users to choke up their usage and force conversion to a paid account.
Any way a lesson learned.
