How can I make sure Dropbox doesn't sync my old files to the website upon connecting the app?
I've used Dropbox for at least a decade and have it on all my devices: iMac, laptops, phone. Recently my main laptop suffered a catastrophic iced-tea baptism and since then, I've been working tempora...

You can't. If you re-link the computer to your account, it will be a true sync in both directions and there's a high probability that you'll end up deleting items in your account which don't exist on the laptop.
When this much time passes, the safest thing to do is start over. Remove or rename the existing Dropbox folder and uninstall/reinstall the application so it acts as though it's a new computer. It means downloading items that you already have on the computer, but it's the safest way to ensure you're not deleting items in your account.
