Recently added files and folders are not showing on other users computers.

Hi,

I'm sharing dropbox with my work colleagues. Dropbox is in the network folder and is being shared on the work network. We're all on Windows 11. Everything has been working fine until recently when it seems we are not seeing each other's updates on files and folders since the beginning of July. Below is some screenshots of what we're seeing:

In the 2022 Folder I've created a 2023 folder on my computer:

In the same 2022 folder on colleague's computer is not showing the 2023 folder:

Similarly, on my colleague's computer you can see a folder called July:

In the same folder on my computer, the July folder is not showing:

Lastly, a file I worked on on 11 July 2023 which you can see in the date modified column on my computer:

The same file on my collegue's computer shows as the 2019 version:

What could the problem be? Please help.

Hi HaniN, welcome to our Community!

Let's jump right into this! As a first thing, can you clarify if you're using one Dropbox account, that you're sharing between devices, or if you have two separate ones, and you share content between them?

Based on the screenshots it seems you're using the same account, I just want to confirm, and double check.

Also, it seems that on your colleague's computer there are no syncing icons next to the files in Dropbox. Are we sure the app is up and running? Can you clarify the app's current syncing status, and version at the moment?

    Keep me posted!

    Hi Megan,

Thanks for responding to my msg.

We are using 1 account (mine) and sharing dropbox files over a private network. When I click the Dropbox icon on my computer it shows  a grey box and a msg "Dropbox 179.4.4917 Up to date". Syncing is on and says "no issues".

I have discovered something new: If go to file manager on my PC and access my Dropbox through this path: C:\***\Dropbox.... then we don't see the updates and files as I mentioned in my first message. HOWEVER, if I access Dropbox through this path: C:\Network\***\Users\PUBLIC\Dropbox... then I see all the files and folders we're looking for! It seems we have to access Dropbox through the Public folder to avoid the problems we were having. Not sure if you have something to add to this. Should I move dropbox to the PUBLIC folder on my PC?

Hi HaniN, can you try moving the folder, following these steps and update me on the results?

    Hi Megan,

According to the dropbox menu, my dropbox location is currently at C:\Users\Admin\Dropbox. Where would you like me to move it to?

HI HaniN, just for clarification, is the Public folder shared by other users on your computer, or on a network of any kind?

    Hi Jay

Yes, the Public folder is shared (read&write) on the WORKGROUP network. To be honest I'm still confused about the difference of accessing dropbox through PUBLIC folder and USER folder -I'd have though it would be the same. I'm still experiencing the problem that if I make changes to files by accessing dropbox through C:\...USER\DROPBOX, those changes do not reflect if I access DROPBOX through C:\...PUBLIC\Dropbox. The simple solution seems to be to ensure everyone accesses dropbox through the PUBLIC path, but that doesn't really explain the underlying problem. If you have an explanation, I'd be grateful to hear it.

    Regards,

    Hani

Hey HaniN, sorry to jump in here.

Just wanted to check some things; when you login to the account online, do you see your updates there?

And what is the sync status and version of the Dropbox app on your colleague's computer, when they hover over their Dropbox icon?

    Hi Hannah

If I save a file through the USER path, then the file shows up when I log on to dropbox via my brower (but my colleagues can't see the file when they go into that folder from their computers through the WORKGROUP network). If I save a file through the public folder path, then it doesn't show up when I log on to dropbox via my browser, but my colleagues CAN see it when they go into that folder from their computers through the WORKGROUP network.

Here's an example that might clarify: The file excel file Book1 was saved by accessing dropbox through the public folder on my PC and it shows on both on my computer and my colleague's computer but it's NOT showing when I log on to dropbox via my browser:

Now, if I access the same folder via the USER path on my PC, then you can see the file INVGM00009079 on my PC and also when I log into dropbox via my browser, but it DOESN'T show up on my colleague's PC's when they're accessing my dropbox through the WORKGROUP network:

If you like, I'd be happy to have a live chat with a screen share of our PC's so you can maybe figure out what the problem might be.

Hi HaniN! I hope you’re doing well.

First of all, I’d like to mention that, if you’re all logging in to the same personal Dropbox account with the same credentials, this is a violation of our Terms of Service, and it can also result in the account being banned/terminated.

Since it looks like you’re on a free Basic plan, do you happen to have more than 3 devices connected to the same Dropbox account, by any chance? You can also double check this here.
