1Password not syncing to Dropbox
Integration Affected
1Password version 7.9.4
Device
Google Pixel 9 Pro
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Android 16.6.3.855170483-release-arm64-v8a175632286
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)
458.2.4
Question or Issue
I recently noticed that when I open the 1Password app on my Google Pixel phone I get an error message saying the following:
Sync error
There may be a temporary problem with your network or the Dropbox server. Please check your connection and try again after some time.
The version of 1Password I'm using is old and is no longer supported by them. The new version requires a subscription service. Also, the Dropbox account I have is the basic account, and is not the subscription service. Could the fact that I'm using an older version of 1Password and my Dropbox account is the basic one, and not the subscription service be part of the problem. I'm thinking of dropping 1Passwpord and using a difference password database. Has anyone else come across this issue recently?

Thats almost certainly the issue.
Dropbox regularly updates its API which is the connection link between it and Dropbox. Older versions are now no longer supported for safety. Best thing to do is check with 1Password for help.
The fact you are on a free version of Dropbox wont affect this, however.

Hi Mark,
Thank you for your response to my question. I had a funny feeling that using the older version of 1Password was the issue. I had previously contacted 1Password and they recommended I upgrade to the newer version which is a subscription service. I've been looking for alternatives to 1Password. One that I'm interested in looking into is Keepass2Android which is an open source option. From what I've read so far it has good ratings. It also looks like it integrates with Dropbox for backups.
Thank you again for your help.

The version I run, 7.10.2 on iOS, is only six months newer than yours and it still syncs. Have you tried to recreate the connection to Dropbox in 1Password?
I don't have the subscription either. I'm still on an old account.

Hi Rich,
I thought about doing that, but I can't seem to figure out how to do that. I don't know how the Android app differs from the iOS version. If I look under Settings I see a Sync category. Under that all I see are options to disable the setting like Dropbox sync. There has to be a way to change that. I wonder if I need to uninstall the app and reinstall it.

The API is most likely the issue here. I have 1P7 on Android at version 7.9.4 and when the latest Dropbox app released to GA (458.2.4 on 1/26/26) the sync was broken. Switched to beta and still doesn't work with latest 460.1.2
The question is will the API it's using be deprecated forever, or is it a bug which will be patched by Dropbox?

It's not a bug, nor will it be patched by Dropbox. The issue needs to be resolved by AgileBits.
https://dropbox.tech/developers/api-server-certificate-changes
AgileBits would need to update the older 1Password app to use the latest version of the SDK which contains the changes required to stay compatible. However, AgileBits has stated in the past that syncing to services like Dropbox is a deprecated feature and newer versions of their app no longer support it. It's highly unlikely that AgileBits will update the older app.

With all due respect, this feels like a difficult position to take. After all, we haven't had issues with 1Password 7's Dropbox Sync until now. And 1Password 7's last update with in 2022. There should be a legacy interface for the API for things like this. Surely 1Password 7 isn't the only thing broken by it. For what its worth, the last Dropbox API server root certificate upade was ~ June 2024, right?

And why would you? 1Password 7 was built with a version of the SDK that was still supported until the certificate change. Now that the API has been updated with new certificates, any app using the older SDK would suddenly find itself no longer able to connect, even if it was working perfectly until now.
Dropbox notified developers that this was coming in June of 2024. That was after AgileBits ended development and released the final version of 1Password 7 on August 4, 2022. They were focused on 1Password 8, which was first released 5 days after the final release of 7. AgileBits would need to release a new version of 7 that uses the updated SDK.

So applications continue to work with invalid certificates, and without other security updates? No thanks. A simple fact nowadays is that software doesn't last forever, and at this point, we're talking about an application that hasn't been updated in three and a half years. It's not Dropbox's responsibility to maintain support for applications that even the developers of which have deprecated and stopped supporting.
kwkwkw wrote:

It's not. There have been other apps affected by this as well. Any app that hasn't updated to a compatible version of the SDK (released in 2024!) and uses specific functions of the API (certificate pinning) will be affected by this.

In the beginning of 2021 they changed the certificate root but reactivated the previous one briefly so embedded applications could be updated (their only connectivity was through Dropbox, and since they couldn't connect, they couldn't receive new certificates). When the certificates from that root expired, Dropbox once again changed to the new root.
While there could have been updates in 2024, I'm not familiar with any.
I was curious so I just installed Dropbox and 1Password 7.9.4 on an old Galaxy 7. I was able to sign into the Dropbox application without a problem. In 1Password I selected Dropbox and I was brought to the Dropbox website to sign in and authorize the application to connect to my account. I approved the connection and was immediately brought back to the main 1Password screen where I could select Dropbox again. Basically, nothing happened in the app.
Here's the interesting part. Prior to doing this, I checked the Dropbox account I was using to make sure 1Password wasn't already authorized, and it wasn't in the list of apps.
After trying to make the connection in the 1Password app and it failing, the app was linked to the account.
This shows that Dropbox is receiving the request and linking the application, but 1Password isn't handling the data being sent back by Dropbox.
This is clearly something that 1Password would have to resolve, likely by updating their application, but since they've ended support of 1Password 7 and are focused solely on 8, that's not likely to happen.

Hi
I have the same issue.
Using 1password 7.9.4 with free Dropbox.
Has anyone found a replacement password management tool? And a way to migrate from 1password to another password manager?
I'd prefer not subscribing to the new 1password

I haven't looked into migrating yet because 1Password is still working on iOS. When it stops, I'll probably go to KeePass. It's what we use at work so I already have it on the phone, and it works well enough. Can't complain about the price either.
