The Dropbox desktop app is slow when navigating my Dropbox folder or viewing files on Windows 11
Device
Custom desktop
- AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
- 64GB RAM
- Samsung SSD 980 PRO 1TB
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Windows 11 Pro 24H2
Dropbox App Version/Browser Version
229.4.5197
Question or Issue
As I try to navigate my Dropbox folder in Windows or view any file (regardless of size) there is about a 10-15 second delay before it does anything. I can almost log into the web version of Dropbox and access the file faster than I can clicking on a single folder directly in Windows.
This has been happening for a year or so now. I reinstalled Dropbox a month or two ago, switched to the Windows Store version and just reinstalled the normal desktop app version today. It is still occurring. I don't have iCloud installed or use OneDrive, I've tried reinstalling Dropbox about 3 times now. Is there a way to tell what is causing it to run so slow? Or what is causing it to run slow?

Same problem still in Helsinki Finland and Dropbox Desktop App with Windows 10. Navigation so so painful slowly.
Support trying to do their best, I believe.
Have tried re-installing and installing, new profile etc. etc. I think MS updates, the last ones, have something to do with this because timing matches and before those - never problems with Dropbox Desktop app.

Sorry to hear that, Treguard. If you temporarily quit the Dropbox app, and try to take an action on your Dropbox files then, do you still experience delays?

Unfortunately I think I was being optomistic. I'm still having regular long go-slows. Usually when performing file operations. Deleting a file for example results in a 20 second wait before it does anything. Just a static deletion dialogue that sits there, and then suddenly carries on after the delay.

Treguard No, i'm currently working with Dropbox support to investigate it. They just had me do an advanced re-install again to no avail so far.

Hey Treguard, thanks for sharing what you did to resolve this issue! I'll make sure to pass this along to the team.
Is it possible that this is causing the issue for you as well, Vae Victis? Or do you perhaps have iCloud installed on the computer in question?

Using Dropbox Desktop App in three devices. Windows Update this week -> one after one has became painfully slow. You cant follow folders with your mouse like before. Re-starting etc. - no help.

I'm now thinking that this problem may be due to having unresolvable shortcuts on my desktop. I had a number of shortcuts that were unresolvable (as they point to network locations that are currently unavailable). Having removed them, all seems ok now. I wonder if Dropbox is perhaps somehow triggering Windows to attempt to resolve these shortcuts on a regular basis? Windows has always been terrible at handling unresolvable shortcuts, and will usually lock up when it attempts to access them. Usually this is only a problem if you accidently double click one, but if Dropbox is triggering them in some way it would explain the frequent long freezes. Does anyone else with this problem have similar shortcuts?
