The Dropbox desktop app is slow when navigating my Dropbox folder or viewing files on Windows 11
Device
Custom desktop
- AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
- 64GB RAM
- Samsung SSD 980 PRO 1TB
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Windows 11 Pro 24H2
Dropbox App Version/Browser Version
229.4.5197
Question or Issue
As I try to navigate my Dropbox folder in Windows or view any file (regardless of size) there is about a 10-15 second delay before it does anything. I can almost log into the web version of Dropbox and access the file faster than I can clicking on a single folder directly in Windows.
This has been happening for a year or so now. I reinstalled Dropbox a month or two ago, switched to the Windows Store version and just reinstalled the normal desktop app version today. It is still occurring. I don't have iCloud installed or use OneDrive, I've tried reinstalling Dropbox about 3 times now. Is there a way to tell what is causing it to run so slow? Or what is causing it to run slow?

Walter No, i don't have any Apple devices so I don't have iCloud installed. The only apps in my taskbar right now are: Discord, Malwarebytes, CyberPower PowerPanel, Bluetooth icon, Windows Defender, KeePass, Steam, Canon Network Scan Utility, Windows Phone Link, FortiClient, and Dropbox

Did you ever get this resolved, or work out a cause? I have the same problem, and the long delays when performing any file related actions are driving me crazy! It goes away if I uninstall Dropbox, but if I close the Dropbox app, it still happens.

Hey Treguard, sorry to see that you're also having the same issue here.
Do you perhaps have iCloud installed on your computer?

Not on the computer that is having problems, but it is on one of the other computers that I sync to Dropbox and that computer is left on all the time. Could that other computer have an impact on my main computer even though iCloud is not running directly?
This is a fairly recent problem. Dropbox worked ok until perhaps a month or two ago.

Hmm, not sure if that might be the case here.
Do you perhaps have any other apps that might be interfering, like an antivirus, VPN, firewall, etc.?

Same problem in Finland. Dropbox App is very slow when navigating in the folder.
It wasnt like that earlier. Maybe after last WIN update this week.

I'm now thinking that this problem may be due to having unresolvable shortcuts on my desktop. I had a number of shortcuts that were unresolvable (as they point to network locations that are currently unavailable). Having removed them, all seems ok now. I wonder if Dropbox is perhaps somehow triggering Windows to attempt to resolve these shortcuts on a regular basis? Windows has always been terrible at handling unresolvable shortcuts, and will usually lock up when it attempts to access them. Usually this is only a problem if you accidently double click one, but if Dropbox is triggering them in some way it would explain the frequent long freezes. Does anyone else with this problem have similar shortcuts?

Using Dropbox Desktop App in three devices. Windows Update this week -> one after one has became painfully slow. You cant follow folders with your mouse like before. Re-starting etc. - no help.

Hey Treguard, thanks for sharing what you did to resolve this issue! I'll make sure to pass this along to the team.
Is it possible that this is causing the issue for you as well, Vae Victis? Or do you perhaps have iCloud installed on the computer in question?
