Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but we have great news!

Hi Jay,
The file is marked as Online Only.
When I test this in Windows 10 22H2, the .txt file becomes available (White icon, with the green checkmark), when I double click the file.
This is the behavior we need in Windows 11 22H2.

3 years agoHi everyone, I hope you’re all doing well.
Anyone that has the same issue, besides Richie, can you please clarify what’s the app version of your Dropbox app?
Also, are you only having the issue with .txt files or with all files that are online-only?

Edit: Not relevant.
- Parfa3 years agoExplorer | Level 4Hey Miklos, please re read the title for this thread. You can start your own but please don't hijack this one, thanks.

I was unaware that everything in Dropbox is now "online only" after a default install where you select to sync everything and set default new files to be available locally. You still have to manually find the Dropbox folder - right click it and select "Make available offline". This was not the default behavior last time I reinstalled - this this is a terrible UX decision - it should be something you select during install or from within the Dropbox app itself, having to right click the root folder and open the secondary context menu on Windows 11 to get your actualy Dropbox library locally is bad design - but I degress.

I have a client that I working with that has the exact same issue. They have Windows 10 22H2 computers as well as Windows 11 22H2 computer and only the new Windows 11 computers have this issue.
Dropbox v.164.4.7914.
The issue is ONLY with the .txt files. No other files have this issue.
Also, it is with .txt files that are in the Online-Only state. If they download the files, then the issue goes away. - Walter3 years ago

Hey Manok02, sorry to hear about this.
Can you please check if this persists on the latest, stable version of the desktop app found on this page?If it does, I'd suggest having your client making the files they'd like to open available offline on their computer first.
- Mur Ami3 years agoHelpful | Level 5I just installed dropbox in my new computer (Windows 11), and I am experiencing exactly the same problem. In my old computer with Windows 10 it works perfectly. It just happens with .txt files online-only. Please, help me to solve the problem.

Still having this issue. Any idea what the problem is?
- Manok023 years agoExplorer | Level 4
Just an FYI on this. My client set Microsoft Word as the default txt file program, and it doesn't have the issue. Only when Microsoft Notepad is the default.
- Mur Ami3 years agoHelpful | Level 5Thanks for the information. I just did it, and the problem with txt files remains.

It is possible that the client didn't do through testing and didn't realize that the files they were opening were actually downloaded to the computer already. I will follow up with them and see.
- Mur Ami3 years agoHelpful | Level 5Ok, thanks for the feedback.

I went to the link provided for the Beta and ended up with Dropbox version 167.4.4719 installed. It did not fix the problem for online-only .txt files when trying to open them with Windows 11 Notepad program. I receive "Unspecified error". I can open the file with a different text editor, though.

Hey asm1974! Thanks for giving that a try.
Before installing the beta app version, did you enable early releases for your Dropbox account via your web preferences here?
Please scroll down that page a bit, toggle the setting On, and try to install the beta app version again.
Let me know how this goes.

Good news! I allowed the early releases in the preferences of my Dropbox account, then I installed the recommended file above. It worked! Thanks for the solution.

No, I hadn't enabled early releases--I thought that only affected automatic updates, and since the version I was on (167.4.4719) was a higher number than the recommended beta release (167.3.4684), I figured I must have the fix.
In any case, I did as you recommended, enabled early releases, tried to download 167.3.4684...and ended up with 168.3.4769 instead! But the problem seems resolved in the version I've ended up on, so I won't complain.
Thank you.
