Couldn't upload. Give Dropbox permission to access this file
Hello-
I'm running MacOS 13.0.1 and recently, I have had no luck removing the single badge notification. I have tried everything, reinstalled dropbox several times and now i've removed everything (...

Hi Hannah
I have exactly the same problem as Riqiv, except the filenames are different: .run & .lock (see attached photos). Have tried everything suggested & still the problem persists. Very annoying to have a red exclamation badge permanently/repeatedly appearing on my dropbox menu icon - to inform me of what I already know about the two files it cannot sync etc.

HI mitchellmedia, the red icon is a notification, which can be seen in the bell icon. If you click there, are you able to mark the notifications as read, which will remove the red icon?
- mitchellmedia3 years agoHelpful | Level 5
Indeed. The notification is the other screenshot I attached. When notification read & closed the red notification icon reappears shortly after & so on repeatedly. That is the issue, because the .run/.lock file issue is not resolved. Unless anyone here can help.
- mitchellmedia3 years agoHelpful | Level 5
& then it constantly reappears because the notification issues (see other screenshot) cannot be resolved by any suggestion on this thread so far

Hi there,
I'm familiar with the "notification" icon. This is different...a syncing issue with a file.
Not sure if you saw my previous snapshots so here is one 🙂

Could you try using this feature to ignore those two files, so that the Dropbox desktop application doesn't try to sync them?
- Riqiv3 years agoExplorer | Level 4
Hi Jay,
I'm going to try something before I start typing instructions into the terminal on my Mac. I will remove ALL files and folders from Dropbox and see what happens. Then put them back in 3 different folders and try to find with files are causing the issue.
Oddly, when I push "Go to file" as in screenshot nothing happens. I've also searched for these files on my iMac to no success.
I'll keep you all posted after my attempt at putting things back into DB in sections and after trying your suggestion if I get around to it.
Thank you 🙂

@Jay have tried this via terminal, so fingers crossed 🤞

I am having similar issues with the .localized file. I have tried all of the recommended fix permissions option and it came back in 5 minutes. I cannot locate the .localized file as it is apparently a language file.

@Jay Ima try 'this feature' thing with terminal 7 let you guys know
- mitchellmedia3 years agoHelpful | Level 5
The terminal thing to get dropbox to ignore these files (.localized / .run / .lock) did not work
- mitchellmedia3 years agoHelpful | Level 5
The terminal thing that Jay suggested 'this feature' to get dropbox to ignore these files (.localized / .run / .lock) did not work

Sorry to hear about this, Ryan22 and mitchellmedia.
Do the files in question exist in your account on dropbox.com? If so, can you delete them from there and see if that helps?
- mitchellmedia3 years agoHelpful | Level 5
The two files (.run and .lock [others have mentioned .localized]) do not appear when I click the 'Go to file' option on the dropbox alert window. The files do not appear with a Mac folder or spotlight search either. The others and myself have tried all of these type of obvious suggestions and many others more in depth, but the problem persists

The .localized file does not appear in either my dropbox on the web portal, nor on the Mac when I search it or click "go to file" in the sync issues window.

Thanks mitchellmedia and Ryan22 for checking.
Just to confirm, have you also tried these steps to fix your hardlinks and permissions?
- mitchellmedia3 years agoHelpful | Level 5
Hannah Yes, one of the first things I tried: fix permissions several times - no joy; then also tried fix Hardlinks, also didn't work
- Riqiv3 years agoExplorer | Level 4
Hello there,
As an experiment I EMPTIED the entire Dropbox Folder to my desktop. It synced to my iPad and that Dropbox (on iPad) is also empty.
However, I am still getting alerts saying "Couldn't upload. Give dropbox permission to access this file." (See screenshot.)
Strange behavior!!!
- Ryan223 years agoHelpful | Level 5
Yes, I have tried all the recommended steps thus far and it goes away for about 10 minutes and then presents the issue again
- Riqiv3 years agoExplorer | Level 4
Sure, no problem...if we could solve this for me and other Dropbox users that would be good!
Do you need my email address???
- mitchellmedia3 years agoHelpful | Level 5
Hannah Can you update me with the conclusion of your email correspondence cited above, if a solution is found, as I have the same issue (except with .run and .lock files)

mitchellmedia, since we need visibility over your Dropbox account to investigate this further, is it OK if I log a ticket for you to this email address?

Yep, no problem 🙂
