Dropbox not uploading/ uploading v slow
I have dropbox installed on multiple devices and they all work fine, except it has suddenly stopped uploading on my windows laptop.
I moved a load of photos off my phone onto dropbox on my laptop last week and only a handful have uploaded. The icon in my tray says it is syncing 405 files and has 36 minutes left.
It's definitely not a problem with my bandwidth and I have checked the settings to make sure that dropbox isn't set to a low upload speed.
I have tried pausing sync and restarting, I have tried closing dropbox and re-opening. I have also tried restarting my laptop and it uploaded 5 files then stopped again.
I am a pro user and have only used 50% of my available space.
Can anyone help?
- Let me send over some more details and tips to determine the cause!
- For starters, you may have a look here for some steps to adjust your bandwidth locally.
- Secondly, you could try force quitting all other applications and see if this helps improving your syncing speed.
- Also, let me ask you whether you’re in a work or home environment.
- You could use the link below to check your connection speed through your ISP and local network by using the following link: http://www.speedtest.net/
I’ll be following-up here, so please keep me updated in your reply!

Thank you, Hunter. I was going to make the same reply.
Remember, everyone, that while most ISPs and speed test sites display their results in bits (kilo or mega), the speeds reported by Dropbox are in bytes. Be sure to do the conversion before comparing. As pointed out by Hunter, a transfer speed of 800 KB/s is equivalent to 6.4 Mb/s.
And finally, each file that you upload is hashed, compressed, then transferred, encrypted, and stored on the Dropbox servers. That entire process is included in the aggregate KB/s speed that's displayed in the Dropbox sync status. - Jocelyn R.111 years agoNew member | Level 1
Pretty sure he meant 800Kbps as nobody ever uploaded at 6.4Mbps to Dropbox in the history of man!

Guess I need to do a little fact checking and testing.

Jocelyn R. - My upload speed is 955.4 KB/s, which is equivalent to 7.64 Mb/s. http://i.imgur.com/DDh9bPq.png

Was being sarcastic... I am also getting this crazy fast 7Mbps upload speed (sometimes, on a good day) on my Gigabit connection!

The reason speeds are so bad is that we are on the brink of the next great Internet crash. We have reached a critical mass of companies like Dropbox that are promising much more than they can deliver.
Dropbox was great a few years ago, but it is clear that the executives have stopped listening to their engineers and that is the beginning of the end for this once-fine company.
No doubt the people responsible for actually making the site work as it should know exactly how to fix it, but the people in the C-suite reject their ideas because it would cost money, and every penny spent to improve customer experience is one less penny for their salaries and bonuses, and god forbid they don't take home extravagant sums.
The only answer is to create our own better version of Dropbox and run it as it should be run.

I too unfortunatelyJUST signed up to dropbox pro for the year, i went to upload my first photo album and am blown away by how SLOW it is. Im not that computer savvy and assumed i must be doing something wrong. However after reading this forum im sorry to read that it seems to be everyone's experience too. Is there any chance of getting a refund? I feel totally ripped off as there are so many companies out there offering this service im so gutted i picked dropbox. Its highly frustrating.

Our votes from Stockholm/Sweden: Been trying to sync for weeks.
- Sync speed: 5,6-15,2 kB/sec
- Estimated sync time: 30-90 days
- No of files: 130.000
- Subscription plan: Dropbox Pro
- Hardware: Macbook Pro Retina (early 2015 model)
- Router: Apple Time Capsule (latest model)
- Tested operating bandwidth to Internet Provider at home: 250/10 Mbit
- Tested operating bandwidth to Internet Provider at work: 1/1 Gbit
Trying all sorts of settings without any improvement. I have used the service for years, and it has changed to extremely low, close to fatal performance during the last 6 months.

Just chiming in to say that I've been seeing the same thing. I upgraded to the 1 TB plan yesterday, planning to use Dropbox Pro to sync all of my files, but the upload speed is stuck at about 150 KB (yes, kilobytes, capital B) per second. Sometimes it briefly fluctuates up to about 1500 KB/sec but usually it fluctuates downward. Meanwhile speedtest.net reports the actual upload speed of my Internet connection as about 20 Mbits/second (or 2.5 megabytes per second).
As others have pointed out, this is obviously something the company is aware of, and they continue advertising and selling this service with the full knowledge that it doesn't work.
If they can't provide the advertised service economically, then they should either (1) raise the price to whatever it costs to provide the promised service, but this time keep their promise, or (2) if they are concerned about people abusing a fast connection (e.g. frivolously adding and removing lots of enormous files without regard to how long it takes to sync them), then Dropbox should impose some monthly transfer quota in addition to the storage quota. I'm sure most Pro users would prefer a transfer quota over a service that doesn't work at all.

Well this is it. Today I migrated away from 1password (that requires Dropbox for syncing) and moved to Lastpass.
This allowed me to moved all my files to Google Drive and let me tell you this, it is MUCH FASTER not comparable to the shitty speed I was getting from Dropbox. I also downloaded my whole Google photo library at 800Mbps!!!
The sad thing is, I really liked 1password but because they don't want to support anything other than Dropbox on iOS and because I really wanted to get rid of Dropbox, I had no other option.
