A shared folder takes up space on both the sender's and the receiver's Dropbox account.
If you have a Basic 2GB account, and someone shared with you a folder that's 2GB or more, that would immediately reduce your quota, and put you out of space.
If you wish, you can ask the user to share a link with you, but that would allow you to view and download the file, and not edit.

No.
Shared links are one way download only.
If you need to then share back you either need a shared folder (which uses quota) or you can ask them for a Requests link which allows you to upload to them

Hey there, bbzebra, happy Tuesday!
You won't be able to do that when using a shared link for view only purposes.
However, if you need to add content to said folder then the sender can create a File Request and send it your way, in order for you to be able to add the content that you need.
