My account is full and stopped syncing due to a shared folder
I am so angry right now that I wish I could just delete DropBox and not use it again. But I need to use it because that's the way my Client prefers to share files. Because they have shared folders that are bigger than my quota, it has limited my abilities on dropbox to where I can't even upload files to send back to them. So I'm just using my Google Drive and I'll use WeTransfer if I need.
I hope someone from DropBox hears this and does something about it. It's dirty and not right to try to force someone into a paid subscription, or a bigger paid subscription, because the people that they do business for use a larger DropBox subscription/plan.
Also, would you please add a column to show the size of each folder/file so you don't have to hover over each folder and say "show file/folder info" to find the size??

Hey dstimac - thanks for sharing your thoughts on this with us.
I just wanted to clarify that this is the way shared folders work. They use space in each member’s account unless they're part of the same Dropbox team account. In this case, you could use shared links and file requests instead of a shared folder.
As for your last query, can you clarify which platform you're using? Is this for the website, for example, or the desktop/mobile app instead? I'm only asking because it should already be an option on the website.
Thank you!

Hi dstimac,
Walter is correct, when the other person share a 'Folder' with you, the whole Folder is shared to you and will take up the same size on your end.
Is it possible to communicate with your client, letting them know you do not have enough space to receive such a huge Folder, instead could they create a new folder for you, and share only what is necessary with you, if that is possible.
From your end, if you no longer need access to the folder they shared, you can go to the Shared Dropbox Folder, right click on the Folder, hover your mouse over <Dropbox>, select <Manage folder access> scroll and find your name, select <Remove my access>. This will free up the space taken up on your Dropbox limit, files downloaded will remain on your computer, but they will stop syncing from thereon. You Dropbox account limit should be back to the state before your client shared the folder with you, and technically your account should start syncing and function like normal.
Hope this help.

Thanks Walter and Jason,
This is helpful info. I'll see with my client if they can use shared links and file requests instead. And I'll also check if there are folders that I can "remove my access" to.
I'm just using this in Chrome on a mac.
Thanks again,
D
