Online my account is full but on the desktop app it shows less space is used.
Hi Guys,
My local Windows Dropbox is fully synced with my online Dropbox. Windows Explorer file/properties shows my Dropbox folder is 576 MB but to my surprise, dropbox.com and dropbox app both say my dropbox is full. I have checked the plan tab and found my regular file size is 3.4 GB which is not correct. My shared folder only takes less than 100 MB. What is going on here? Why the discrepancy? Any inputs?
Thanks,
Tao
We can confirm that the most recent releases of Dropbox should have resolved this issue. Users affected by this issue were unable to see all of the backups on their account. This meant that when they believe they deleted some or all of their files, there could still be backups taking up space on their account. This should no longer be affecting users who should be able to see all of their backups.
You can find out deleted information on disabling and deleting backups below:
If you disable the backup and choose to "Leave content in Dropbox", your backup content would still be there until it was permanently deleted.
When you go to the Backups page and see no content, be sure to check the deleted section, too.
You can download the files from this location if you need to store them locally on your device.
To clear out the data from the deleted backup, follow these steps:- Navigate to
dropbox.com/backup/all - Click on
Show deleted backups - Select their backup and click on
permanently delete
Some users did not have backups, but they were members of shared folders which were taking up space on their accounts. You can remove shared folders using these instructions.

Backups tab shows me I have zero folders located there, taking up zero space. Should I backup my text files to external hard drive, uninstall and delete my Dropbox account on all 3 devices, and reinstall fresh? I’m really only trying to use it for two creative writing apps, Scrivener and Scapple. iCloud takes care of everything else on my Macs and iPad that would need cloud backup, but those two apps were built with Dropbox in mind. Thanks for any help you may be able to offer!

Hey BDS1, could you please clarify what exactly is reported in your account's plan tab in regards to your quota?
Also, do you see any files or folders taking up space in your account's homepage or your sharing tab perhaps?

Hi Walter, it says I’m using 1.8 GB of my allotment of 2GB for the basic plan. No shared folders are present. There are old text files that I deleted, still showing up, but they can’t be opened or deleted again and don’t give a value for taking up any space. I cleared Dropbox cache, didn’t change anything. The only folder I see is the folder with Scrivener and Scapple at 211 MB. I’m puzzled! Thanks.

Ok—fixed it. My external SSD attempted to do a backup apparently, and until I hit the link to go to back up page, I wasn’t at the actual right page to see the problem. Thank you both!

Hi! My dropbox is refusing to sync on the grounds that I have about 6.5gb of data on it (I have the free plan). Trouble is, I don't. I've checked and I have 9.01mb of data, including shared folders. I've also recently done some runs through my data deleting things, and it still says I'm at 6.5gb. Does anyone know what's going on? I've tried following the advice on this article...
...but all the instructions seem to be either for Mac (I'm on PC) or for an older version of dropbox, as, for example, my app has no dropbox icon that I can see.
I really like dropbox and want to keep using it, and I'd even consider upgrading if I knew why my files were taking up more space than they look like, but I don't want to resolve this just by upgrading because I don't want to pay for a glitchy system.
Thanks!

Hey ElectricWhelk, I moved your post to this relevant thread, so you can take a look at the info posted here.
Is it possible that you enabled our backup feature and your space is being taken up by backups?
You can check that here.

I am on dropbox basic plan. I have only 3 text files in my account with combined size of about 35 MB. dropbox says I am using 3.5 GB, stopped sync and keeps suggesting upgrade!
I do not have any shared folders or files that can attribute the additional size to. any ideas why dropbox would be reporting such high usage for simple files?

Hey _aj_, thanks for reaching out.
Can you check your backups page, to see if you have any backups taking up your space?

I have a Basic 2GB plan. But my account says that I have used 77GB. How can I have so much more than my plan limit? As I loaded up files, wouldn't Dropbox have stopped me and required me to upgrade right then and there?
Is it possible that years ago I had a paid plan, loaded up more files, and then allowed my subscription to lapse?
And of these files totaling 77GB, I can only see files that total 42MB. Even if Dropbox has denied me access to any storage exceeding 2GB, then shouldn't I be able to see all the files up to my 2GB limit?
