Hi Enrico62, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Just for clarification, could you confirm the exact steps you take when opening and editing the app on your mobile device? Are you opening the Dropbox mobile app, and then tapping the Excel file to open in Excel, or are you trying to use Excel first to open the file?
Are all the apps on the latest version?
This will help me to assist further!

Yes dropbox and excel for mobile are both the latest version. It happens to me both on the S8+ 8 Gb Ram tablet and on the Note 20 12 Gb Ram mobile phone.
The file is storage on Dropbox, I view it, click on "open with" , open with excel , then edit it.
Then I go to "save as" , I look on dropbox for the location to put it click on "save"and the message appears.

Would you mind sending us a screenshot of the error message, Enrico62?
Can you also, uninstall Dropbox and the Excel app, restart your device and reinstall them, to see if that helps?
Just keep in mind, that if you're on a free Basic account and you have more than 3 devices linked to your account, if you uninstall and then reinstall, you won't be able to sign in to the Dropbox app, unless you unlink a device.

The Messagge is in Italian ....
This problem happen only between Dropbox and Excel , word ( microsoft suite). File pdf , photos , or other work.
If I save on Drive or Onedrive an Excel or Word file they work.
Thanks for your help !

Was the file created originally on the Dropbox site, or by the Excel app on the mobile or desktop?
Is the file in a private or shared folder?
- Enrico623 years agoExplorer | Level 4
The files has been created by excel app .
The file are in a shared folder
The problem has been started yesterday afternoon , on my mobile phone and on the tablet in the some time.
Tryed to uninstall both , dropbox and excel , reboot the tablet , installed the Apps , some problem .

Hey Enrico62, sorry to jump in here, but since you mentioned a tablet, could you clarify the size of its screen for us?
For Android tablets with screens larger than 10.1", an Office 365 subscription is also required to edit Office files stored in Dropbox Basic, Plus, and Professional accounts.
- marloweloy3 years agoHelpful | Level 6I'm having the same issue. When saving it says, "Can't Edit. This file is read-only, first save a copy of the file." and in fact is it already a new copy. Tried clearing cache, reinstalled Excell and Dropbox yet its happening to my android devices.

Hi marloweloy, thanks for posting here today!
When you edit your Excel files, do you open the Dropbox app, and then tap the Excel file to open it there, or do you use Excel to open the files there directly?
If you could also clarify the version of the app you use on your mobile, and also send me a screenshot of the error message, that'd be amazing.
Thanks a bunch!
- marloweloy3 years agoHelpful | Level 6Either I open it from Dropbox or open it from excel, it doesn same thing. I can't save anymore. But if I use a laptop or pc, no problem at all. I just wish I could attach screenshots here.
- marloweloy3 years agoHelpful | Level 6And then if you go to settings on excel, there's a big red X right next to Dropbox under "Connected Services". But no matter how many times you connect and disconnect, it could still access Dropbox but unable to save.

Hi marloweloy, is your device's OS, Excel app and the version of Dropbox you use there, up to date?
- marloweloy3 years agoHelpful | Level 6They're all latest. I have Uninstalled and reinstalled excel from the play store. My S23 Ultra is auto update as well.
- dluptonmd3 years agoCollaborator | Level 9This is happening to me with the android word app. Whenever I create a file and save it to Dropbox, it opens as read only. I can create a file and save it to my phone documents without any problems. The file will open and allow me to edit. Thx for help.

Hi @dluptonmd, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Could you clarify the exact steps on how you create the Word file? Are you doing in first in the Word app, or are you using the Dropbox mobile app to create the Word file?
This will help me to assist further!
- dluptonmd3 years agoCollaborator | Level 9I use the word app to create the document. you can't create a document with Dropbox. you can only store them there and open them for editing into word.

Hi dluptonmd , thanks for the clarifications there.
Can you also let us know your device's exact OS version and the version of the mobile app installed there as well?
- dluptonmd3 years agoCollaborator | Level 9Android 13 and up todate vers app.

Hey @dluptonmd , you should be able to create a Word file directly through the Dropbox app, by tapping on the (+) button, can you try it that way and let us know if it works?
- dluptonmd3 years agoCollaborator | Level 9I don't see that option. I can create a text fie but that's not what I want to do. I want to create a word document per the other 2000 I have saved to drop box and as I have been doing for 10 years until 2 days ago.

Hi dluptonmd , can you send me a screenshot of the page you see, when clicking your + button in the Dropbox app?
Also, do you notice the behavior you mentioned with all of your Word files, or some of them?
- dluptonmd3 years agoCollaborator | Level 9How do I send a screenshot? Anyway, I'm not interested under any circumstances in using Dropbox to create documents. Maybe temporarily as a workaround, but only that. Also please see the thread. This only happens with word docs I create and save to drop box, not docs I create and save to my phone docs or to one drive

Hi dluptonmd , you should be able to attach your screenshot back to me, by using the camera-like icon and attaching it to your next response.
If I were you, I'd try to uninstall both Word, and Dropbox and then re-install them. Can you give this one a go, and let me know if you get the same results?
- dluptonmd3 years agoCollaborator | Level 9I've uninstalled and reinstalled per thread. I still don't see a camera icon. Exactly where is it?

Hi dluptonmd , you might need to use your computer for that, but he is how it should look. It's the third icon, from the right.
