1095 TopicsI'm getting an "Attempted to zip too many files" error when trying to restore a backup.
Device (Dell XPS 15, iPhone 13, etc.) Operating System/Browser (if using the web) (Windows 11, macOS14.3, etc.) Dropbox App Version/Browser Version (Chrome 124, Safari 17 etc.) Question or Issue While trying to restore, or in Dropbox's parlance, "Download" an existing backup of a laptop being replaced by a new laptop, I received the error message shown in the title. No further explanation given. I searched for the error in the Help Files and found... NOTHING! I searched here in the Community and found a thread right away from two years ago that described receiving the same error message. One reply was marked as a solution, and although it may have helped with the OP, pointing him to a Help File article on backups, it did not help me decipher the error message or how to work around it. In fact, the article stated that after signing in to Dropbox on the new computer and downloading and installing the app, that I should have been prompted to automatically restore the backup from the original laptop. That did not happen. I can't even imaging how it could happen since the software wouldn't know which device that had been backed up the new device was replacing. This was very discouraging to me in that not only finding out other people had experienced the same issue, but it wasn't acknowledged in Dropbox's Help Files, and replies had been turned off in the thread, despite the lack of a real solution. My fear is that, despite its hefty fees for services, Dropbox backup and restore may not be really ready for prime time. It's pretty obvious that restoring to a downloaded zip file is not a true restore and involves a lot of extra work by the user, even assuming the backed up data is intact. My guess is that Dropbox doesn't have a true restore function, and that also, it has a limitation on the number of files that can even be downloaded in a zip file. Anyone else experienced this error message and actually found a solution?25Views0likes1CommentHelp with downloading my stuff from the website
Hi, I had a Dropbox subscription that didn’t suit my needs, and I eventually stopped using the service. I forgot about it until I received a notice that my files would be deleted because my account is over the free plan limit. That part is understandable. However, I’m having trouble downloading my materials. Some files are over 150 GB, and the app has been giving me issues. I managed to manually download some files through my browser, but now I’ve received an email saying that my traffic exceeded the 20 GB daily limit. Since my files are much larger than that, I’m stuck. What can I do? How can I contact someone at Dropbox to help me download my files so I can then delete my account? Thanks in advance.89Views0likes11CommentsCan't download my files anymore. I get a "download error" message.

Whenever I try to download through my Windows 11 set-up, the download fails and I get kicked off my internet connection. I've seen a number of people complain about this - on here and on Reddit - and the solution appears to involve turning off virus protection, but that clearly isn't a viable or sensible solution. Dropbox needs to figure out what's going wrong and fix it. As it stands, the platform is no longer viable for me and the company I work for. If a proper solution isn't found soon, we will be moving our business elsewhere. To make matters worse, there's the problem of moving files. I used to be able to click Move, then click Create new folder, navigate back, Click Move again, the new folder would come up and I could click on it. Job done. Now, Create new folder is greyed out and I have to go through a ridiculous number of steps to create the new folder and move the file. The obvious folders aren't offered as defaults and it's just a total faff. Dropbox used to be very efficient and easy to use. Now it's effectively useless. The only way that I can actually use it is by doing everything via a Mac to carry out the downloads then email the files to my PC - obviously not a viable solution in the long term. As I said, if Dropbox can't find a solution to these issues, we'll be moving our business elsewhere.152Views0likes7CommentsLarge download get interrupted for my client.
I have to urgently send a large ProRes file to a client that I’ve already uploaded to Dropbox. The upload worked fine (months ago), but when the client goes to the link and presses download, it works for a while and then cuts off every time! (Before it even gets halfway done) It’s 110GB, so it’s large, but how am I supposed to share it with them if the download keeps breaking down? I have a Professional subscription, and the client is a film production company that has a stable, full fibre connection, so it’s very unlikely to be their internet. Any help greatly appreciated! They’ve tried to download multiple times on different days.82Views0likes2CommentsMoving files from Dropbox to an external HDD without going through laptop drive.
Device HP Laptop 15 S Operating System/Browser (if using the web) Win 11 home Dropbox App Version/Browser Version Chrome Question or Issue I have a laptop with a SSD. 477 GB storage, 467 GB used. My Dropbox has files on it I want to save on external drives and remove as I no longer need access to them. I just want them archived and gone away. These files total ~40 GB. Explorer shows these files having total size of ~40 GB, but only occupying less than 200 MB on the actual disk. I have Dropbox Sync set to Online-only. I have a couple of external HDDs each with ~1TB free. How do I move them from Dropbox to the external HDD without them having to land on the laptop, given that there is only 10 GB free on the SSD on the laptop?85Views0likes1CommentHow can I save a Dropbox backup folder to Google Drive?
Question or Issue I've been receiving OVER THE LIMIT emails for years now re: my dormant FREE DB ACCOUNT so I just went and transferred all of my DROPBOX files to my Google Drive. But I supposedly still have 340GB in a video file (folder, actually) sitting in my DROPBOX BACKUP folder. But no matter what I do it refuses to drag & drop into my Google Drive like I just did with all of my regular files and folders. How do I transfer that backup folder to my Google Drive or can I NOT transfer backup files and must just delete? Thanks in advance for the solution! When I share a file or folder and create a password-protected link, it would be great if, when someone opens it, they aren’t asked to log in or register — clicking the download button should simply download the file.124Views0likes3Comments
