Can't open .msg files on Mac

Hi, can anyone help pleas?

I can't open .msg files on my Mac that have been saved in dropbox from a PC. These are the things I have tried with no success

1) I have tried sharing the link from dropbox to Microsoft outlook

2) I have tried opening the file with the Microsoft outlook application & word application

3) I have tried downloading a msg file reader from apple

  • Hi Megan, thanks for getting back to me.

I've ended up purchasing a .msg file app from apple, so I can download them and open them with that. Thanks 🙂

Hi Morgs, I'd be more than happy to help with this!

When you try to open the file, using Microsoft's Outlook, do you get any specific errors? Feel free to send me a few screenshots, if you do.

You also mentioned that the .msg files have been saved in Dropbox from a PC. Are they currently in your Dropbox folder, on your Mac?

Have you tried downloading the file directly from Dropbox?

    Keep me posted!

I purchased licence for Outlook 365 and yet I still cannot open my .msg files in Dropbox. Downloaded files either showed garbage or blank. Help!

Hi Linda Leong, let's jump into this!

Which platform do you use, in order for you to open your .msg files? Do you use our desktop app, website, or mobile app?

Do you get any errors when trying to open these files?

    Keep me posted!

    Hi Megan

I noticed the Dropbox default apps are Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Perhaps, I should add Outlook into this list? If so, what should I do?

On my Mac, I already have a licence for Outlook 365. However, each time I try to open an .msg from web or downloaded files from Dropbox, I either get the following or blank.

    Looking forward to your advice.

    Many thanks in advance!

Hi Linda Leong, thanks for the added info you've provided!

Please keep in mind that Dropbox doesn't preview .MSG files. You'll need to export them and use an application that is capable of opening them.

    I hope this clarifies!

Hi Megan. Thanks for your patience. I managed to open .msg files but not all. Furthermore, when I saved the files, they become .eml. Hence, now my friends have problems viewing files with .eml extension. Sigh...
