Files don't open if Dropbox is not running on my computer

Hi all,

My files are like hostages held by Dropbox and I cannot open them unless I use Dropbox.

I wanted to stop using Dropbox a while back and after uninstalling Dropbox I noticed that files are not accessible (more than 800GB of data).

I searched online and sensed that Dropbox was part of the issue.

I had to restart my subscription which I did not want to do but had no choice and once Dropbox was reinstalled all files were accessible.

This happens even when Dropbox is set up to save offline and SmartSync includes all my files to be available locally.

I had a long session with Dropbox support which did not provide a solution.

I am desperate to fix this without having to manually download all files from Dropbox online backup, as well as continue to pay.

Thanks,

Barry

Hi Barrry, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

From your description, it does sound like the files were not available offline, but were online-only instead.

Could you attach a screenshot showing the Dropbox folder as it appears in Explorer/Finder?

Also, could you provide the ticket ID from when you contacted the support team?

This will help me to assist further!

    Hi,

The support was on a chat so I don't have any case number or information.

Could you double click the folder and attach the screenshot so we can see if there are any sync icons on the files?

I can't see the image very well, do these green tick icons have an underline? Is the Dropbox desktop application currently running and syncing in the system tray?

I have checked all the files in my Dropbox folder, right-clicked and clicked on Make Available Offline hopefully it will help.

You can also do this to the Dropbox folder directly, which will make all the files download. Keep me posted!
