Passwords not available on the new computer. Pop-up never arrives, why?

I just got a new computer after the last one suffered a hard-drive failure. I'm trying to set up and sync my accounts on the new machine, and was happy because I saved most of my passwords in Google and Dropbox. However, when I'm trying to access Dropbox Passwords on the new computer I am getting this error message:

Check “Chrome Windows” for a notification
Let’s make sure it’s you and sync any passwords you already added.
We’ll finish setting up after we get your approval on Chrome Windows.

I don't know what I'm supposed to check. I am not getting a pop-up or any notifications. I have the Dropbox Passwords extension installed on my browser. I have my browser set up to allow Dropbox to open pop-ups and send notifications. I am not running any antivirus or popup blockers, to my knowledge. Any ideas what I might be missing?

Hello, bubbliciouscyborg, I'm sorry to hear about this. Let's see what we can find!

Can you please clarify if you have access to a device that you previously connected to your Dropbox (Passwords) account or not?

Also, could you maybe clear your browser's cache or try another browser and let us know how it goes?

    Let me know more!

Hello, thanks for your reply! I unfortunately don't have access to the old computer. It is completely dead. I might be able to have the hard-drive restored, but I haven't done that yet. And that was the only device I used Dropbox from. I never logged in on my phone, unfortunately. I have tried multiple browsers and get the same error.

Hey bubbliciouscyborg, can you please try these steps, to see if they help?

    • Download and install the Passwords mobile app or browser extension on your new device
    • Sign in to Passwords using your main Dropbox account email and password—you will be prompted to check your other device for a notification
    • Click on "I don't have that device"
    • Click “Continue”
    • Enter your recovery words in the correct order
    • Click "Continue"

I'm trying to recover my password from Dropbox Passwords and I'm getting this message when trying:

Check “Chrome Mac OS” for a notification

Let’s make sure it’s you and sync any passwords you already added.
We’ll finish setting up after we get your approval on Chrome Mac OS.

Where do I find this notification???

    • My Chrome is up-to-date.
    • I did not receive any PDF with words on them
    • My dropbox is up-to-date
    • I can log into my dropbox with no problem.
    • I've cleared my cookies and my catch on my chrome
    • I've read the other responses and none of those responses tell you where the notification is
    • I open the dropbox passwords extension on chrome, and it just opens dropbox
    • My other computers do not have a “Chrome Mac OS”  notification.

Can anyone tell me where this notification is located?

Hi TERRENCEJ1S, let's jump right into this!

When you sign into the Dropbox Passwords app, you'll get notifications on any other connected devices in order to login on that current machine.

From the description, this would be a Chrome browser running on a Mac device you've signed into. Could you check the device and see if the notification has popped up?

What about the recovery words Dropbox sent you, when setting up Passwords? Do you happen to have them, by any chance?

    Keep me updated!
