That is correct. If you keep a personal account separate and set up a new account to join the Team (as I mentioned, it tries to force you to do),

When you join a team and on the onboarding you are asked to either join with the email you have been sent to do it or a set up a new account. If you set up a new account the email on the account is changed so the new account keeps the data you have while the one with the email that was invited to the Team becomes part of the Business Team but with an empty account.

So, its all down to that onboarding and what you do with it. Unfortuantely if you dont read what its saying when you do this its easy to miss this part (and lets be honest, most of us are click happy through screens like this - I certainly am).

    Hi Mark

Making multiple requests is my desperation of getting my personal data back....

secondly dropbox logic defies any rationale on company admin being owner of personal account and data .

    Here is my scenario:

    • You have a personal Dropbox account with your own files
    • Your company invites you to join their Dropbox Business account
    • When you join, Dropbox promises to keep your personal files separate from company files

    What Dropbox Claims:

    • Your personal data stays yours
    • Company admins can't access your personal files
    • Everything is kept separate and secure

The Problem (The "Absurdity"): Despite Dropbox saying your personal files are protected and separate, there's apparently something in their terms or policies that suggests the company admin actually has some form of ownership or control over your personal data once you join their business account.

    Why This Seems Contradictory:

    1. Dropbox says "your personal stuff stays private"
    2. But also says "the company admin has ownership rights"
    3. These two things don't make sense together

The Core Issue: If your personal data truly remains separate and private (as Dropbox claims), then logically the company shouldn't have any ownership rights over it. But if the company admin does have ownership rights, then your data isn't really as separate and protected as promised.

This creates a logical contradiction - your data can't simultaneously be "completely separate and private" AND "owned by the company admin." It's one or the other, but Dropbox seems to be claiming both things are true.

Dont log multiple ones. Every time you do you go to the back of the queue with all of them. It may be worth closing the old tickets at http://www.dropbox.com/support (or unanswered one)

Also, they cannot give you the data or account back the ONLY person who can is the Admin of the team because you agreed to that transfer of data when you joined the team. It tells you this when you sign up. It tries to force you to NOT do it. When you sign up, they become the owner of the account and the data. There is nothing, at all, illegal with this.

You need to log legal action, if relevant (i.e. if theyve actually done anything wrong) with the relevant employment tribunals etc. where you are against your employer.

Also, to add, Dropbox isnt open on a weekend so no replies will be received to your tickets etc. until Monday at earliest.

Hi Nancy , thanks for your concern and advise ..i am at tethers here and fully frustrated at such a feature provided by dropbox for transferring account data and control to any company admin by just clicking an invitation mechanism and a single popup telling personal account holders about the merger if his accounts (this is absurd -expecting long time users to know nitty gritty details of your terms of service which gives away their data and control without a proper cooling time or explaining in clear terms the impact of accepting a company account invite or showing red danger activity for account takeover and losing your data ). Now imagine the other company is a fraud and is using this feature as a hostage for controlling your personal data which was unknowingly attached to company account. this is such a huge property violation . And this data hostage fraud is happening to me by the company admin and dropbox is supporting that.

Further more here : response to support

    Hi Thomas

Thanks for contacting me and bringing a sense of relief that dropbox does care for it's users and their data.

kindly note my response to your queries

Would you like me to reach out to your team Admin to see if they would allow for the recovery of your account?

Yes , please reachout , i have already raised multiple request to my past business partner who is the team admin of the company and he is intentionally not restoring my account due to fallout between us in hackbook.ai. -startup we were woking out for the past 7 months

Again, if they do not provide a positive confirmation to restore the account, then Dropbox Support will not be able to recover the account on your behalf.
I am doubtful of any response from anish (anish.hackbook), but i have raised a legal notice detailing the unauthorised usage and control of my personal account.- I have attached it for your reference

You can also reach out to them to request the restore of the account but I do presume that this is something that you likely have already done.

I have already done that multiple times but no response .

kindly let me know what i need to do - purchase subscription to get my account & data back

    thanks & regards swapnil

From what I understand, you were invited to join a Dropbox team with your personal plan, and now it seems that your Dropbox account has been deleted. Is this correct?

And just to add to this swap0 when you do this the onboarding makes it very, very clear that this is what is happening - so much so it tries to force you to set up a new account for it.

Hi swap0, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and I’m sorry to hear this happened.

From what I understand, you were invited to join a Dropbox team with your personal plan, and now it seems that your Dropbox account has been deleted. Is this correct?

First, it's very important for me to state that when someone joins a Dropbox team, the account and the content within become subject to the admin's control, in accordance with our Terms of Service

With that in mind, in order to be able to regain access to the files, one needs to contact the team admin and ask them to restore their membership and then convert their Dropbox account to a personal plan

Having said that, if this is something you've already tried, then it would be best to get in touch with our support team directly. If you've already done that, please make sure to share your ticket ID here, so that I can check the progress of your help request and add an internal note from my side, highlighting the urgency of the request.

Other than that, I’ll be here in case you need something else.
