Install Error 1073741795 on 2 different computers.

Hello,

To Computers in an Office were suddenly not opening Dropbox. They are both on Windows 11.

There is a 3rd PC in the Office that is the same as 1 of the problem ones, and its working fine.

I tried to uninstall the apps from them, but both said "Uninstall Failed".

I ended up having to manually wipe and use a Program to find and force full removal to start fresh.

I did a DISM and SFC, then a CHKDSK.

I proceeded to reinstall, and both get an error code unknown error (Error: -1073741795).

I tried to use download and user the Full Installer Version. Nothing.

To help with any conflicts, I did a clean boot. Nothing.

I can seem to install anymore. They are AIO PC's, one is a Lenovo, the other a HP. As mentioned, there is a 3rd PC that is the same HP Model, and Dropbox works fine.

I can't seem to find straight answers on how to resolve this, I am supporting someone else, so don't know how that will go since I have to pay for a subscription to get live support.

Don't know how to proceed, so I hope a community member knows exactly whats up and how to resolve this.

    Hey CPKNC, welcome to our Community!

    That sounds like a Windows error, and not directly one coming from Dropbox. I did some digging and found this relevant Microsoft article.

    Have you tried installing the app using an offline installer, by any chance?

    Apart from that, do you happen to run any antivirus/firewall or VPN programs on your computer(s)? If yes, can you disable them temporarily and then, attempt to install the app again? Does the installation go through now?

    Keep me posted, and we'll take it from there!

    I found and also followed that article already. I assume you didn't read the thread, you just found it because it was on Microsoft. Noting that every proceeding comment after the suggestions to fix were negative.

    Hello Stéphane,

    No.... no solutions were found on my side. Anything on your side?

    I follow this thread where it says dropbox engineers are working on this but for now no solutions were given.

    https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-installs-integrations/Installation-Failed-Error-Code-1073741795/td-p/563661/page/11

    Good luck

    =="

    Which leads to a 3 year old forum that has:

    Our engineers have put out a new Beta Build: 150.3.4929, which fixes the 'Installation failure: Error code 1073741795'. You can find details about the fix, and how to install it, here.

    Which has:

    =="

    Features in this update:

    Right-clicking on a Dropbox folder will now launch the selected folder in your web browser with an interactive menu to organize content.
    A new entry point from Backup Setting to the Backup Plan modal.
    An error will now prompt when you are offline during external drive backup setup.

    Fixes in this update:

    Crashes on macOS 12.3 and above continue to be fixed.
    Issues causing the Dropbox desktop app to restart unexpectedly in the taskbar have been fixed.
    Information on sharing folders with a link has been clarified and now has a Learn more link that directs to shared folder FAQs.
    Prompt that reads “PC” during backup user onboarding has been corrected for Mac users.
    Issues causing syncing to stick for users backing up FAT32 or exFAT drives on macOS have been corrected.
    Installation on Windows failing due to “Error 1073741795 (illegal instruction)” has been fixed.

    =="

    Which at the end, nobody responded to the plea for help:

    =="

    I haven't resolved this issue, because I keep getting the same error message  (error code 1073741795) and I can't install Dropbox on my surface.

    Someone helps me, please

    ===

    The "Full Installer" mentioned = Offline Installer.

    I disabled all that stuff and no VPN. Keep in mind that the 3rd PC that works had these things running, so its clearly not looking to be AV/Firewall and there is no VPN Installed.

    I also tried to get Dropbox from the Microsoft Store on one, and it installed, but also wont load.

    The Event Viewer for the Offline/Full Installer has this:

    =="

    Windows cannot access the file  for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the programme Dropbox because of this error.

    Programme: Dropbox
    File:

    The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
    User Action
    1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the programme runs again.
    2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
    - It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
    - It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
    3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
    4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a back-up copy.
    5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

    Additional Data
    Error value: 0x0
    Disk type: 0x0

    =="

    They both have the same error. The HP is 6 months old, and 2 computers happen to fail at the same time does not suggest hardware or even Windows corruption at the same time, nor drivers as they won't suddenly have the same sort of driver error. They are both clean of virus/malware, and the 3rd computer would have been affected if you want to chalk it up to that.

    Also, again, the 3rd PC was purchased and installed at the same time as one of the problem ones, yet has no issues, so it would be hit with the same issues

    Then the next error proceeded after that:

    =="

    Faulting application name: Dropbox.exe, version: 212.4.5767.0, time stamp: 0x4af70747
    Faulting module name: dropbox_core.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x6dd5ecf6
    Exception code: 0xc000001d
    Fault offset: 0x00000000005e1a44
    Faulting process id: 0x0x147C
    Faulting application start time: 0x0x1DB40BEF4056383
    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Dropbox\Client_212.4.5767\Dropbox.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Dropbox\Client_212.4.5767\212.4.5767\dropbox_core.dll
    Report Id: 1fc58b17-2020-4712-92c6-9db04270538f
    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

    =="

    Again, both have the exact same error.

    Another solution would be to try an older Dropbox, but anything found to do so, there is a response that dropbox won't load properly and will try to update to latest, so if it was a later versions issue in the installer, it can't be dodged.

    Hi CPKNC, what is the exact version of Windows 11 that you're running on those machines?

    Are these company-managed devices? Did you install the Dropbox desktop application with admin privileges?

    When you say you did a full install, do you mean the advanced reinstallation steps?

    PC 1 HP: Windows 11 Home 23H2 Build: 22361.4541

    PC 2 Lenovo: Windows 11 Home 23H2 Build: 22361.4541

    No, these are not managed by the company through Azure etc, they are Local off the shelf Workstation devices running Home Version, not Pro.

    Yes I tried to run as Admin and on another Admin Local Account, still the same.

    It has been already mentioned about full install.

    Full Install/Full Version = Offline Installer.

    Dropbox has attempted to be installed with the standard latest version download via the website which downloads the files for install.

    I downloaded the offline installer of the latest version where it doesn't require downloading the files as the files are all present.

    Both these methods are also ran as admin.

    I have followed the advanced reinstall method on both, to super clear it out. I also required to use software to find all remenants of Dropbox on both at one point, as using Windows Uninstaller List failed to uninstall Dropbox.

    I also tried on 1 PC the Microsoft Store version, where I was able to install successfully without error, but trying to load it did nothing, which acted like the original issue to trying to reinstall in the first place.

    The PCs stopped loading Dropbox, not only at startup, but at all. Files stopped syncing and could never get to run, even after reboot and clean reboot.

    And again, 3rd PC in this Office is the same as PC 1, including version and build, but Dropbox works fine.

    Which again makes things odd that 2 different PCs suddenly have the exact same issues at the same time but other devices of the business, including 1 being exactly the same as 1 of the PCs, does not. All attempts fail and the same error in Event Viewer occurs as mentioned in previous comment.

    Could you attach a screenshot showing the exact prompt you're getting when installing the Dropbox desktop application?

    The popup comes up and says downloading and then installing. It loads for up to a minute then disappears then the new pop up comes up with the unknown error and the long code.

    And in case any attempts to ask again, yes, I did the advanced reinstall instructions which didn't work.
